Merton Priory
Merton Priory was founded in 1114 by Gilbert Norman, Sheriff of Surrey under Henry I. It was located in Merton, Surrey, England, at the point where the Roman Stane Street crossed the River Wandle. By 1117 the foundation was colonised by Canons Regular from the Augustinian priory at Huntingdon and re-sited in Merton, close to the River Wandle.
Plough Lane
Plough Lane was a football stadium in Wimbledon, south west London. For nearly eighty years it was the home ground of Wimbledon Football Club, from September 1912 until May 1991, when the club moved their first team home matches to Selhurst Park as part of a groundshare agreement with Crystal Palace. Both clubs' reserve teams then used Plough Lane as their home ground until 1998, when the site was sold to Safeway.
Municipal Borough of Wimbledon
Wimbledon was a local government district in north-east Surrey from 1866 to 1965 covering the town of Wimbledon and its surrounding area. It was part of the London postal district and Metropolitan Police District. Wimbledon Local Government District was formed in 1866 when the parish of Wimbledon adopted the Local Government Act 1858, forming a local board of 15 members to govern the area. The Local Government Act 1894 reconstituted the area as an urban district.
Merton (parish)
Merton was an ancient parish in the Brixton hundred of Surrey, England. It was bounded by Wimbledon to the north, Mitcham to the east, Morden to the south and Kingston upon Thames to the west. The 1871 Ordnance Survey map records its area as 1,764.704 acres . The parish was centred around the 12th century parish church, St. Mary's in Merton Park. The parish had only nominal existence after 1907 when the Merton Parish Council was abolished and the parish formed the Merton Urban District.
Norbury Brook
A tributary of the River Wandle, Norbury Brook rises near Lower Addiscombe Road and flows north-west through Selhurst, Thornton Heath and Norbury to join the Wandle at south Wimbledon. A short stretch of this is visible in South Norwood at Heavers' Meadow, near Selhurst railway station, where the brook can be seen in a concrete channel next to the British Rail works as it runs north west along the bottom of the site before disappearing beneath Selhurst Road.
Merton Park tram stop
Merton Park tram stop is a halt on the Tramlink service in the London Borough of Merton. It overlaps part of the site of the former Merton Park railway station which was served by passenger trains on the West Croydon to Wimbledon Line until 1997, and by trains via Tooting Junction on the Merton Abbey Branch until 1929. The station building of the original station (about 200 yards south) has been converted to a private house.
Morden Road tram stop
Morden Road tram stop is a stop on the Tramlink service in the London Borough of Merton. It is on the site of the former Morden Road railway station on the Wimbledon-West Croydon line, which closed to heavy rail traffic in 1997. The tram stop consists of a two platforms on either side of double track, linked by pedestrian level crossings. Immediately to the east of the station is a single track section which reaches as far as Phipps Bridge tram stop.
Merton Abbey railway station
Merton Abbey railway station was a railway station in Merton on the Tooting, Merton and Wimbledon Railway. It was opened in 1868, became part of the Southern Railway (SR) in 1923. It closed to passengers on 3 March 1929 and to goods on 1 May 1972, although goods trains continued to run to a nearby private siding serving the Lines Brothers ("Tri-ang") toy factory until 1975. It was near Colliers Wood and South Wimbledon stations on the Northern Line.
Merton Park railway station
Merton Park railway station was a railway station in Merton, Surrey (now southwest London), serving both the West Croydon to Wimbledon Line and the Tooting, Merton and Wimbledon Railway. Closed in 1997, part of the site now serves as a tram stop on the New Addington to Wimbledon line of the Tramlink network.
