New Cross house fire

The New Cross house fire was a devastating house fire during a birthday party in New Cross, southeast London, on Sunday, 18 January 1981. The blaze killed 13 young black people. Some in Britain were shocked by what they perceived as indifference among the white population and accused London's Metropolitan Police Service of covering-up the cause, which some suspected was an arson attack motivated by racism.

Convoys Wharf

Convoys Wharf, formerly called the King's Yard, is the site of Deptford Dockyard, the first of the Royal Dockyards, built on a riverside site in Deptford, by the River Thames in London. Located in Deptford, in the London Borough of Lewisham and on the Thames Path, Sayes Court once attracted throngs to visit its celebrated garden created by the seventeenth century diarist John Evelyn. Now completely buried beneath Convoy's Wharf and the run down and vandalised Sayes Court Park, the area shows little sign of its former glory, despite having been a key factor in the creation of the National Trust.
