Flintshire (historic)

Flintshire (Welsh: Sir y Fflint), also known as the County of Flint, is one of thirteen historic counties, a vice-county and a former administrative county, which mostly lies on the north east coast of Wales. Flintshire was notable as having one of the few large county exclaves (an area known as "English Maelor" or "Maelor Saesneg") to survive most of the 20th century.

St Winefride's Well

St Winefride's or Winifred's Well is a well located in Holywell, Flintshire, in Wales. It claims to be the oldest continually-visited pilgrimage site in Great Britain. The well is believed to be connected to St Mary's well and chapel in Cefn Meiriadog, Denbighshire. In that it is one of the few locations mentioned by name in the anonymous medieval alliterative poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, it is interesting to compare the site's beheading history with the beheading game in the poem.

District of Delyn

Delyn is an area in north Wales. From 1974 to 1996 it was a district of Clwyd, but is now included in the county of Flintshire. Delyn is twinned with Menden, Germany. The Borough of Delyn was formed in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 by the merger of Flint Municipal Borough with the urban districts of Holywell and Mold, and Holywell Rural District. The name "Delyn" was formed by combining the names of the area's principal rivers: the Dee and the Alyn.

Flint television relay station

The Flint television relay station was an analogue television transmitter housed on a residential tower block called Bolingbroke Heights at the centre of the Town of Flint in North Wales. Flint is situated on the estuary of the River Dee which forms part the Wales border with England. Between 1996 and 2009, the mast provided BBC One Wales and S4C to most of the town's residents.

Pantymwyn is a small village just outside Mold in North Wales in the county of Flintshire. The village is located within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lying on the east side of the Clwydian Range. Pantymwyn is 4 miles west of Mold in Flintshire, North Wales. The village has a pub (the Crown Inn), a post office and convenience store, a garage and an 18-hole uplands golf course (the home of Mold Golf Club).

Alyn Gorge

The Alyn Gorge is a spectacular forested gorge section of the River Alyn north between Loggerheads and Rhydymwyn in Wales. The west side of the valley rises gently to Moel Famau, while the east bank is along parts a cliff with evidence of tram lines and old quarry workings. The path along the edge of the gorge is well maintained, with metal bridges and barriers across sites which are popular with climbers.

Milwr Tunnel

The Milwr Tunnel is a mine drainage adit running some 10 miles from the hamlet of Cadole near Loggerheads, Denbighshire to Bagillt on the Dee Estuary in North Wales. It was originally built to drain the lead mines beneath Halkyn Mountain, which were plagued with flooding in their lower levels, but enabled the exploitation of new lodes and was variously used for the extraction of lead, zinc and limestone during its working history.

Holywell Rural District

M. S. Factory, Valley

Rhes-y-cae

Rhes-y-cae is a small parish and village located in Flintshire, Wales. It is situated between Pentre Halkyn and Rhosesmor and is part of the local government community of Halkyn. Local facilities include a chapel, a church and a small primary school, Ysgol Rhes-Y-Cae. The parish was consecrated on June 27, in the year 1847. Although the village shop has shut down, and the bakery closed to the public, Rhes-y-cae is still home to a pub, the Miners Arms.

Holywell Workhouse Chapel

Holywell Workhouse Chapel was built in association with Holywell Workhouse in Old Chester Road, Holywell, Flintshire, Wales. It was built, together with some "vagrants' wards" for the workhouse, in 1883–84 to a design by the Chester architect John Douglas. The chapel is built in stone with a slate roof and has a shingled flèche. The workhouse later became Lluesty Hospital. The chapel is a listed building.

Moel y Gaer, Rhosesmor

Moel y Gaer (Welsh for "bald hill of the fortress") is a prehistoric hill fort located on a summit at the southern end of Halkyn Mountain, overlooking the village of Rhosesmor, Flintshire, Wales. Excavations suggest that the site was occupied, perhaps sporadically, from the Neolithic period to sometime before the Roman conquest of the area. Remains of a timber long house on the hill summit have been dated to the third millennium BC and may represent the earliest human occupation of the region.

Cilcain Hall

Cilcain Hall is a country house 2 miles north-northeast of the village of Cilcain, Flintshire, Wales. It was built in 1875–77 for W. B. Buddicom and designed by the Chester architect John Douglas. The hall is built in stone and has a red tile roof. Its architecture includes Elizabethan elements. Douglas also designed an entrance lodge which was built around the same time on the main road. The lodge is no longer present.

Cornist Hall

Cornish Hall is a large house 1 mile west-southwest of the town of Flint, Flintshire, Wales. Originally known as Lower Cornist, the property was significantly altered by Richard Muspratt in about 1884 then greatly rebuilt by the Summers family – when it became their main residence in 1889. It was the birthplace in 1746 of Thomas Totty, an admiral who served under Lord Nelson.

Gwernaffield

Gwernaffield (or Gwernaffield-y-Waun) is a village and local government community in Flintshire, Wales. It lies about three miles west of Mold on the eastern side of the Clwydian Range. The community has an area of 7.53 km and is bordered by the River Alyn on three sides. The community includes the neighbouring village of Pantymwyn and had a population of 1,851 at the time of the 2001 census. The name of the village comes from gwern, feld and gwaun (Welsh for 'moorland').
