The Roaches

The Roaches (from the French les roches - the rocks) is the name given to a prominent rocky ridge situated above Leek and Tittesworth Reservoir in the Peak District of England. The ridge with its spectacular rock formations rises steeply to 505 m . Along with Ramshaw Rocks and Hen Cloud they form a gritstone escarpment, which is very popular with hikers, rock climbers and freerunners. It is often very busy especially at weekends.

Tittesworth reservoir

Tittesworth Reservoir is a water storage reservoir near Leek, Staffordshire, England, fed by the River Churnet. The reservoir and associated water treatment works are owned and operated by Severn Trent Water. The reservoir was created in 1963 when an earth embankment dam was built across the River Churnet valley. Tittesworth is the second largest reservoir by volume in the county of Staffordshire. A visitor centre contains a restaurant and small shop.

Upper Hulme

Upper Hulme is a hamlet situated on the border in North Staffordshire near the border with Derbyshire and between Leek and Buxton. The area is popular with climbers as it is located very close to The Roaches. Until 2005 the area was used by the British Army as a training area. That space has now been vacated by the Ministry of Defence and is currently for sale.

Gun is an undistinguished hill at the southern end of the Peak District. The hill is mainly moorland with some small wooded areas. Gun is often overlooked by walkers who prefer the neighbouring peaks of The Roaches, Hen Cloud and Ramshaw rocks. However it still features typical moorland scenery and some pleasant hill walking. The hill overlooks the town of Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands which is an ideal base for visiting the Peak District National Park.

Nicholson War Memorial

The Nicholson War Memorial in Leek, Staffordshire, England is a 1925 war memorial. It was commissioned by local manufacturer Sir Arthur Nicholson and his wife Lady Marianne, ne Falkner, in memory of their son Lieutenant Basil Lee Nicholson, who was killed in action at Ypres, Belgium, in 1915, at the age of 24; and in memory of all the other local men who died fighting in World War I.
