Rudyard, Staffordshire

Rudyard is a lakeside village in the county of Staffordshire, England, west of Leek and on the shore of Rudyard Lake. Rudyard was served by a railway station which was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway on 22 July 1850.

Caldon Canal

The Caldon Canal (or more properly, the Caldon Branch of the Trent & Mersey Canal), opened in 1779, runs 18 miles from Etruria, in Stoke-on-Trent where it leaves the Trent and Mersey Canal at the summit level, to Froghall, Staffordshire. The canal has 17 locks and the 69 metre long Froghall Tunnel.

Rudyard Lake

Rudyard Lake is a reservoir in Rudyard, Staffordshire. It was constructed in the late 1700s to feed the Caldon Canal. During the 1800s it was a popular destination for daytrippers taking advantage of easy access using the newly constructed North Staffordshire Railway. The lake is still used for many water activities such as boating, canoeing, fishing and also for walks and recreational steam train trips. It is famous for being the namesake of Rudyard Kipling.

Rudyard Lake Steam Railway

The Rudyard Lake Steam Railway is a minimum gauge railway and the third railway of any gauge to run along the side of Rudyard Lake in Staffordshire. The railway runs for 1.5 miles on the track bed of an old standard gauge North Staffordshire Railway line. After the NSR line closed down, a small narrow gauge train ran on the site for two years before moving via Suffolk to Trago Mills in Devon. The current line started in 1985 and is 10.25 gauge, and operates to a timetable.

Horton, Staffordshire

Horton is a village and civil parish in the English county of Staffordshire. It is situated about 3 miles (5 km) W of Leek. Horton Hall is a Jacobean manor house, built on the site of an earlier house dating back to the 12th Century. It was in the ownership of the Edge family from the 1330s until 1710. It was damaged in the English Civil War, and rebuilt by Timothy Edge from 1653; his initials with the date occur on the lintel of the gateway in the garden.

Cliffe Park railway station

Cliffe Park railway station was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway (NSR) in 1905 on the Churnet Valley line to attract visitors to Rudyard Lake (actually a reservoir), which the NSR were trying to develop as a leisure and tourist attraction including a golf course. {{#invoke:Footnotes|sfn}} The station was originally named Rudyard Lake and was at the northern end of the lake. There were no settlements nearby and consequently the station had no goods facilities.

Rudyard railway station
