Barnet Gate
Barnet Gate is a small hamlet located on the far outskirts of the London Borough of Barnet, England. It is located in the west hand side of Arkley. It is near to the Stirling Corner junction with the A1. Just to the west is the town of Borehamwood.
Thatched Barn
The Thatched Barn was a two-storey mock-Tudor hotel built in the 1930s on the Barnet by-pass in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England. It was bought by holiday camp founder, Billy Butlin, before being requisitioned as Station XV by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in World War Two, and used to train spies. In the 1960s, it became a Playboy Club, and later it became associated with Elstree Film Studios, and was used as a location for TV series The Saint, and later The Prisoner.
Totteridge Fields
Totteridge Fields is a 97 hectare Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) in Totteridge in the London Borough of Barnet. The SINC includes the privately owned Highwood Hill, and another part is a seven hectare Local Nature Reserve owned by Barnet Council and managed by the London Wildlife Trust. The Local Nature Reserve is an ancient hay meadow habitat consisting of three fields, known as Nutt Field, Hen Mead and Nearer Slay Land, with hawthorn and blackthorn hedgerows.
Barnet Gate Wood
Barnet Gate Wood is a public open space in Arkley, Barnet, London. It is owned and managed by the London Borough of Barnet, and is part of the Watling Chase Community Forest. It is a small ancient wood, with a canopy of oak and hornbeam, and an understorey dominated by rhododendron. Some of the hornbeam are in strange shapes as they were originally trained as hedges and then allowed go wild. The entrance is by a path from Hendon Wood Lane, near the junction with Barnet Road.
Rowley Green Common
Rowley Green Common is a six hectare Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Importance Metropolitan for Nature Conservation in Arkley, North London. It is owned by the London Borough of Barnet and jointly managed by the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Trust and the London Wildlife Trust. It is also registered common land. It is mainly woodland and heathland, although the most important habitat is the peat bog, one of very few left in London. This hosts star sedge, which is rare in London.
Rowley Lodge Field
Rowley Lodge Field is a Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade II, in Arkley in the London Borough of Barnet. Rowley Lodge Field is an old hay meadow, with flower rich grassland and scattered oak trees. It has a good diversity of wild flowers, including great burnet and pignut, both characteristic of unimproved grassland. Patches of acid grassland are dominated by red fescue, and also contain abundant sheep's sorrel and tormentil.
Arkley South Fields
Arkley South Fields are a Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade II, in Arkley in the London Borough of Barnet. It is an extensive area of set-aside agricultural fields with hedgerows and ditches. It is not of great botanical interest, and its conservation value lies in its breeding birds, especially skylarks, a declining species which is a priority under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.
Glebe Lane Pastures
Glebe Lane Pastures is a Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade I, in Arkley in the London Borough of Barnet. It consists of five fields off Glebe Lane, some managed for hay while others are grazed by horses. It contains flower-rich unimproved grassland which is dominated by Yorkshire Fog, with a good variety of other grasses, and Tufted hair-grass is dominant in damper areas. The most important feature of the site is the diversity of its old meadow plants.
Arkley Lane and Pastures
Arkley Lane and Pastures is a 50 hectare Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade II, in Arkley in the London Borough of Barnet. Arkley Lane, off Barnet Road, is an old drovers' road. Located in Barnet Plateau, it is now a quiet country lane with a traditional bank and ditch. The thick hedges are composed of beech and hornbeam, ash, field maple and magnificent old pedunculate oaks.
Totteridge Common
Totteridge Common is a 3.7 hectare Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade II, in Totteridge in the London Borough of Barnet. The nature reserve is the southern verge of the road Totteridge Common, between Totteridge Park and Oak Lodge. It is registered common land owned by the Totteridge Manor Association. The most interesting feature ecologically is a chain of old ponds.
Whitings Hill Open Space
Whitings Hill Open Space is a large public open space in Chipping Barnet in the London Borough of Barnet. It is mainly grassed with clumps of young trees, planted as part of the Watling Chase Community Forest, and a few mature trees. There are good views in all directions from the top of Whitings Hill. A small stream, a tributary of Dollis Brook, flows through the site. There is access from Shelford Road, Quinta Drive, Brett Road and Hackford Close.
Saffron Green Meadows
Saffron Green Meadows or Saffron Green Pasture is an area of public open space and farmland north of Arkley in Hertsmere, Hertfordshire, England. It is owned and managed by Hertfordshire County Council, and is part of the Watling Chase Community Forest and the London Green Belt.
