Niddry Castle
Niddry Castle is a fourteenth century tower house near Winchburgh, West Lothian, Scotland. It is situated near the Union Canal, and is adjacent to a large oil shale "bing", or waste heap. The tower was built around 1500 by Lord Seton. Mary, Queen of Scots, stayed here 2 May 1568, after her escape from captivity in Loch Leven Castle. George Seton, 7th Lord Seton garrisoned the castle in support of Queen Mary in 1572 during the civil war in Scotland.
Newton, West Lothian
Newton or (The Newton) is a small village in the county of West Lothian, Scotland. It lies on the A904 trunk road 2.6 miles west of South Queensferry and the Forth Road Bridge and 6 miles east of Linlithgow. All road traffic travelling west from the Forth Road Bridge currently has to pass through the village in order to gain access to the M9 Motorway although this is set to change under proposals to upgrade M9 Junction 1a as part of the Forth Replacement Crossing scheme by 2013.
Winchburgh rail crash
The Winchburgh rail crash occurred on Monday 13 October 1862, a mile and a half northwest of Winchburgh in Linlithgowshire. At that point, the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway passes through a cutting on a curve. On the day of the accident, only one line was in use due to track maintenance when two trains met head-on. The drivers saw each other when they were some 300 yards apart and managed so that their relative speed was down to under 30 mph when they collided.
