Failsworth

Failsworth is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies on undulating ground, on the course of the Rochdale Canal and north bank of the River Medlock. It is 2.7 miles west-northwest of Ashton-under-Lyne, 2.9 miles south-southwest of Oldham and 4.2 miles to the east-northeast of Manchester city centre. Failsworth lies within the orbital M60 motorway, which skirts Failsworth's eastern boundary. Failsworth had a total population of 20,555 in 2001.

Manchester Velodrome now the National Cycling Centre is an indoor cycle-racing track or velodrome in Sportcity, Manchester, England. It opened in September 1994 and remained the only indoor Olympic-standard track in the United Kingdom for 18 years, prior to the completion of the London Velopark for the 2012 Summer Olympics. A velodrome was proposed as part of Manchester's bid for the Olympic Games of 1996 and 2000, which were awarded to Atlanta and Sydney.

It was opened by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) on 1 December 1853 and was closed by British Railways on 3 January 1966. The station buildings were situated on the northwest side of Dean Lane, where that road passed over the LYR line from Manchester Victoria to Rochdale, and 300 yards north of Dean Lane. It was immediately adjacent to the large LYR Newton Heath steam locomotive shed.
