Belvoir Castle

Belvoir Castle from Jones' Views of the seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen, published in 1829. The medieval castle had been replaced after the Civil War and again rebuilt in the romantic style illustrated between 1799 and 1816, but in the latter year it had been almost destroyed by a fire. It was rebuilt again to largely the same designs, and barring minor details this image shows the castle as it remains today.

Belvoir is a village and civil parish in the Melton district of Leicestershire, England. It is close to the county boundary, the nearest town being Grantham in Lincolnshire, eight miles (13 km) east of the village. The parish includes the villages of Belvoir, Knipton and Harston. Nearby places outside the parish are Woolsthorpe by Belvoir, Redmile, and Croxton Kerrial. The village is the site of Belvoir Castle and so gives its name to the Vale of Belvoir.

Croxton Abbey

Croxton Abbey, near Croxton Kerrial, Leicestershire, was a Premonstratensian monastery founded before 1160 by William, Count of Boulogne. Croxton was the mother house of the monasteries of Blanchland Abbey in County Durham and Cockersand Abbey in Lancashire.

Belvoir Gardens

Belvoir Gardens was designed and landscaped by Elizabeth Howard, 5th Duchess of Rutland who was married to John Manners, the 5th Duke of Rutland. It was created in 1799, the year Belvoir Castle was built. There are many unusual features to the gardens, for example the natural amphitheatre which faces the estate was formed by the moraines of glaciers and a 'root house' or summer house which survives to this day.

Belvoir Priory

Belvoir Priory was a Benedictine priory adjacent to Belvoir Castle. Although once described as in Lincolnshire, England it is within the modern Boundaries of Leicestershire, near the present Belvoir lodge. Begun in 1076 by Robert de Todeni, lord of Belvoir with the intention of being an independent Abbey, it was converted before completion into a cell of St Albans Abbey at the advice of Archbishop Lanfranc. It was disestablished in 1539, as part of the closure of the parent abbey.
