Oakham Canal

The Oakham Canal ran from Oakham, Rutland to Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire in the East Midlands of England. It opened in 1802, but it was never a financial success, and it suffered from the lack of an adequate water supply. It closed after 45 years, when it was bought by the Midland Railway to allow the Syston and Peterborough Railway to be built, partly along its course.

Edmondthorpe is a small village in Leicestershire, close to the border with Rutland. It has Danish origins. The name Edmondthorpe is derived from a corrupted form of the Old English personal name 'Eadmer', in old records spelled variously, Edmersthorp; Thorp Edmer; Thorp Emeri; Thorp Edmeer; Edmerthorp; or Thorp. The most likely origination of the name could be from the Saxon: ED = East; MUND = mound or barrier; THORPE = a street or village.

Ashwell railway station

Ashwell railway station was a station in Ashwell, Rutland on the line between Melton Mowbray and Oakham. Just north of Ashwell was Ashwell Junction where the Cottesmore Ironstone Branch joined. This was in use between 1883 and 1974 and served quarries in the vicinity of Cottesmore and Exton. Part of the former mineral branch line is now Rutland Railway Museum .

HM Prison Ashwell

HM Prison Ashwell was a Category C men's prison located in the parish of Burley, in the county of Rutland, England. The site of the former prison is located about two miles south of the centre of the village of Ashwell, alongside the road to Oakham and opposite the former kennels of the Cottesmore Hunt. The prison closed in 2011, and the site is being redeveloped as a business park after Rutland County Council acquired it from the Ministry of Justice in early 2013.

The Park, Burley-on-the-Hill

The Park was a cricket ground situated in the rural village of Burley-on-the-Hill in Rutland. It was used for first-class cricket in 1790, when an early England team played pre-county club Hampshire. The same fixture was repeated the following year. Also in 1791, an Old Etonians side played the Marylebone Cricket Club. In 1792 the Earl of Winchilsea's XI played Assheton Smith's XI. In 1793, England played pre-county club Surrey at the ground.
