Sevenoaks District

Sevenoaks is a local government district covering the western most part of Kent in England. Its council is based in the town of Sevenoaks. It was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by a merger of the Sevenoaks Urban District, Sevenoaks Rural District and part of Dartford Rural District. To the North West the district borders with two Greater London Boroughs in Swanley, as well as Surrey to the West near Westerham and East Sussex to the South near Edenbridge.

Sevenoaks School is an English coeducational independent school located in the town of Sevenoaks, Kent. It is the third oldest non-denominational school in the United Kingdom, dating back to 1432, behind Winchester (1382) and Oswestry (1407). Over 1,000 day pupils and boarders attend, ranging in age from 11 to 18 years. There are approximately equal numbers of boys and girls. The current Headteacher is Katy Ricks. The school was a pioneer in attracting international students during the 1960s.

Battle of Otford (776)

The Battle of Otford was a battle fought in 776 between Mercia, led by King Offa, and the Jutes of Kent at Otford (in what is today in the English county of Kent). Although the outcome of the battle is not recorded, the re-establishment of Kent as an independent kingdom implies that the battle was won by Kent. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle notes only that the Mercians and the people of Kent fought at Otford, without giving the outcome.

Fort Halstead

Fort Halstead is a research site of Dstl, an Executive Agency of the UK Ministry of Defence. It is situated on the crest of the Kentish North Downs, overlooking the town of Sevenoaks. Originally constructed in 1892 as one of a ring of fortresses around London, Fort Halstead was to be manned by volunteers in the event of a crisis. The base went on to become home to the Ministry of Supply, from which it became the headquarters of the Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment (RARDE).

Vine Cricket Ground

Chatham Vase

The Chatham Vase is a stone sculpture by John Bacon commissioned as a memorial to William Pitt the Elder by his wife, Hester, Countess of Chatham. It was originally erected at their house in Burton Pynsent in 1781. It was subsequently moved to Stowe House but sold in 1848, then purchased in 1857 by a member of the family and installed at Revesby Abbey. It was moved to the grounds of Chevening House in 1934, where it currently resides. It is currently grade II listed.

Chevening Halt railway station

Chevening Halt is a now-closed intermediate railway station on the Westerham branch line in Kent. The line was built as single track with provision for double track. The station was built by South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR) and opened on either 16 or 19 April 1906. It was unmanned and consisted of a platform sufficient to accommodate 2 coaches and small waiting shelter with access via a staircase to the adjacent road bridge.

Sevenoaks railway accident

The Sevenoaks railway accident occurred on 24 August 1927 between Dunton Green railway station and Sevenoaks railway station. The Southern Railway's afternoon express from Cannon Street to Deal left London at 5pm, in charge of River Class tank engine No 800 River Cray. Several passengers later recounted that from time to time the train seemed to roll excessively on fast curves.
