Tong, Shropshire

Tong is a village in Shropshire in England. It is near junction 3 of the M54 motorway near Albrighton. The village is remarkable mainly for its church, St Bartholomews, outside of which is the supposed grave of Little Nell, a fictional character in Charles Dickens book, The Old Curiosity Shop. It is thought that Charles Dickens visited Tong church when his grandmother worked at Tong Castle (demolished in 1954) that stood to the south. Its site is now occupied by the M54 motorway.

The village is on the A5 (here following the course of Watling Street), and is very close to the county boundary with Shropshire. Nearby places are Blymhill, and Tong. To the south of the village is Weston Park the ancestral home of the Earls of Bradford.

White Ladies Priory (often Whiteladies Priory), once the Priory of St Leonard at Brewood, was an English priory of Augustinian canonesses, now in ruins, in Shropshire, in the parish of Boscobel, some eight miles (13 km) northwest of Wolverhampton, near Junction 3 of the M54 motorway. Dissolved in 1536, it became famous for its role in the escape of Charles II of England after the Battle of Worcester in 1651.

Blymhill and Weston-under-Lizard is a civil parish in the South Staffordshire district of Staffordshire, near the border with Shropshire in England. According to the 2001 census, it had a population of 654. The parish includes Blymhill, Weston-under-Lizard, Brineton and Orslow. In medieval times, the manor was held by the Brereton family, baronets of Handforth, Cheshire.

Tong Castle

Tong Castle was a very large mostly Gothic country house in Shropshire, set within a park landscaped by Capability Brown, on the site of a medieval castle of the same name. The original castle was built in the 12th century. During the Civil War it was defended for the King by William Careless, and afterwards by George Mainwaring. The original structure was demolished in 1765 after the estate had been purchased by George Durant who built the house illustrated.

Elder Well

The Elder Well is a holy well located at Blymhill Marsh, close to the village of Blymhill, Staffordshire. It can be found among Elder trees on the north side of the Holy Well plantation. The well is a spring that emerges into a sandstone structure set into the ground. The structure is approximately 1 m square and 70 cm in depth. The well was said to be blessed with medicinal properties and in particular to be a remedy for afflictions of the eyes.
