Clearwell
Clearwell (anciently "Clower-Wall" etc. ) is a village and former ancient manor in the Forest of Dean, West Gloucestershire, England. A recent survey indicated that the population of Clearwell is approximately 350. There are mines locally that date back over 7,000 years to the mining of ochre and are known as Clearwell Caves. Later, the Romans mined iron at Clearwell Meend and it is world famous for arming the Roman army.
Bigsweir
Bigsweir is a locality in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which straddles the boundary between Gloucestershire in England and Monmouthshire in Wales. It is located about 2 miles north of Llandogo, 2 miles south of Whitebrook, and 3 miles west of St. Briavels. It is the Normal Tidal Limit (NTL) of the River Wye, and navigation below this point falls under the jurisdiction of the Gloucester Harbour Trustees. There is no village at Bigsweir.
Clearwell Castle
Clearwell Castle is a mock Gothic mansion located in Clearwell, Gloucestershire. First known as Clearwell Court, it was built for Thomas Wyndham in 1728 to replace an older house which occupied same site. Its name was changed to Clearwell Castle in 1908. The building was constructed of local stone in Gothic style with battlements. It has an imposing gateway formed by two three-storey towers.
Brockweir Halt railway station
Brockweir Halt was a request stop on the former Wye Valley Railway. It was opened to the public on 23 September 1929, it closed in 1959 when passenger services were withdrawn from the line. It was situated just north of Brockweir bridge. Nothing now remains of the trackbed because of the realignment of the A466.
St Briavels railway station
St Briavels Station was a station along the Wye Valley Railway. It was built in 1876 during the construction of the line on the Monmouthshire side of the River Wye at Bigsweir, and was intended to serve the nearby villages of St Briavels across the river in the Forest of Dean and Llandogo which is further down the Wye Valley. It was closed on 5 January 1959 when the line was closed to passenger services.
Whitebrook Halt railway station
Whitebrook Halt was a request stop on the former Wye Valley Railway. It was built in 1927 to serve the village of Whitebrook and opened in February that year. It was closed in 1959 when passenger services were withdawn from the Wye Valley Railway. The station came too late to make full use out of the village's industry. Whitebrook had once been home to three paper mills. However, paper making ceased in Whitebrook in the early 1880s, only four years after the line opened in 1876.
Stow Green, St Briavels
Stow Green Castle, also known as Castle Tump, was a castle near the village of St Briavels in Gloucestershire, England. The castle is believed to have been built after the Norman Conquest. The castle was a small circular ring-motte fortification, once measuring 35 yards across, now only 25 yards, with a high motte, or mound, in the middle and a protective ditch around it. The entrance to the castle was on the south side of the fortification.
Hewelsfield Motte
The Hewelsfield Motte is a roughly circular mound, thought to be a medieval motte built soon after the Norman conquest of England. It is located about 80 metres southwest of St. Mary Magdalene's church at Hewelsfield, in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England. There is no evidence of any masonry structure. There are the remains of a ditch around its base, and other banks and ditches nearby may indicate the existence of a bailey.
