The Bicêtre Hospital is located in Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, which is a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris, France. It lies 4.5 km (2.8 miles) from the center of Paris. The Bicêtre Hospital was originally planned as a military hospital, with construction begun in 1634. With the help of Vincent de Paul, it was finally opened as an orphanage in 1642. This station's noticeable name is actually the name of the commune, which is in its turn is derived from a tavern "Au sergent du Kremlin", a meeting place for French war veterans around 1813, and Bicêtre, an alteration of Winchester, England, the bishop of which owned property here.

The station is named after Léo Lagrange (1900–1940), a French socialist politician and under-secretary of state for sport, who helped organise the People's Olympiad in Barcelona in opposition to the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin and died during the Battle of France.

It is named after the Avenue Paul Vaillant-Couturier and the journalist Paul Vaillant-Couturier (1892–1937) who was a journalist, politician and editor of the Communist newspaper l’Humanité.
