Pentraeth

Pentraeth is a village on the island of Anglesey (Ynys Môn), North Wales, at grid reference SH523786. The Royal Mail postcode begins LL75. Its Welsh name means at the end of (or head of) a beach, and it is located near Traeth Coch (Red Wharf Bay). There is a small river, Afon Nodwydd which runs through it. The village's ancient name was Llanfair Betws Geraint.

Traeth Coch (Welsh for Red Beach) is a wide sandy bay and an area of outstanding natural beauty on the east coast of the island of Anglesey in Wales. The bay is also known in English as Red Wharf Bay and lies between the villages of Pentraeth and Benllech. Each year the Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race takes place from Beaumaris to Traeth Bychan. The race over 14 miles up the Menai Strait and down the Anglesey coast is an exhilarating sail.

Red Wharf Bay branch line

The Red Wharf Bay branch line was a standard gauge railway line in Anglesey, Wales, a branch off the Anglesey Central Railway. It opened fully in 1909, but closed to passengers in September 1930. Freight operations continued until 3 April 1950, and the tracks were lifted during the summer of 1953.

Pentraeth railway station

Pentraeth railway station was situated on the Red Wharf Bay branch line between Holland Arms railway station and Benllech, the third station after the line branched from the main Anglesey Central Railway. Opening on 1 July 1908, a quarter of a mile out of the village it was one of the two largest stations on the line. On the Up (east) side of the line stood the 120ft (40 metre) platform with several associated huts.

Llanbedrgoch railway station

Llanbedrgoch railway station was situated on the Red Wharf Bay branch line between Holland Arms railway station and Benllech, the penultimate station on the line off the main Anglesey Central Railway. Opening in 1909 it was a very simple station with only one short platform on the Up (east) side and a wooden waiting hut. It was an unstaffed request stop with no goods yard or sidings. The station closed in 1930, as did the line itself to passenger trains, and the station building removed.

Red Wharf Bay and Benllech railway station

Red Wharf Bay and Benllech railway station was the terminus station of the Red Wharf Bay branch line, which ran between Holland Arms and Benllech, off the Anglesey Central Railway. The original plan had been to build the station 0.1 mile from Red Wharf Bay, but the final plans saw it built half a mile south of nearby Benllech. Opened in 1909, the station was one of the, if not the, biggest on the line.

Cors Bodeilio National Nature Reserve

Cors Bodeilio National Nature Reserve lies in a shallow valley between Llangefni and Pentraeth on the Isle of Anglesey. Most of the land consists of a lime-rich mire. This type of wetland is rare, giving the reserve national importance. It is host to an large range of plants and animals, including the medicinal leech.

St Mary's Church, Pentraeth

St Mary's Church, Pentraeth is a small medieval parish church in the village of Pentraeth, in Anglesey, north Wales. The date of construction is unknown, but is probably from some time between the 12th to 14th centuries. A church dedicated to St Mary was recorded here in 1254, but there is a tradition that there was an older church dedicated to St Geraint, an early British saint.
