Fatlips Castle
Fatlips Castle is a pele tower in Roxburghshire, in the Scottish Borders. Situated at the top of Minto Crags, above the River Teviot, it was built in the 16th century by the Turnbulls of Barnhills, notorious Border reivers, and owners of nearby Barnhills Tower and farm. In 1545, during the War of the Rough Wooing, the Earl of Hertford burned "Mantoncrake", or Mynto Crag.
Belses
Belses is a village on the Ale Water, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland the former Selkirkshire. It is situated close to Old Belses, and lies south of St Boswells, west of Jedburgh, north of Hawick, and east of Selkirk. Other places nearby include Ancrum, Ashkirk, Belses, Hassendean, Lilliesleaf, Minto, Old Belses, and Salenside. Belses was the site of a railway station on the former Waverley Line, a double track railway which linked Edinburgh with Carlisle.
Minto, Scottish Borders
Minto is a village north of the River Teviot, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, (more or less the former Selkirkshire, Roxburghshire, Peebleshire and Berwickshire), and almost midway between the towns of Hawick and Jedburgh. Minto House is close by, as are Ancrum, Belses, Bonjedward, Fatlips Castle, Hassendean, Lilliesleaf, and Old Belses. In 1992 Minto House was listed as Category A, and largely demolished within weeks.
Craigmount School
For the modern high school see Craigmount High School. Craigmount School was a private school originally for boys, but for most of its history for girls, in Edinburgh. It opened in 1874 and closed in 1966. In its history, it produced a number of notable alumni.
Rule Water
The Rule Water is a river in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, and a tributary of the River Teviot. The Rule Water rises in Wauchope Forest and passes Hobkirk, Bonchester Bridge, Hallrule, Abbotrule, and Bedrule until it joins the River Teviot at Spittal-on-Rule. Other placenames include the name of the Rule Water, e.g. Ruletownhead.
Ruberslaw
Ruberslaw is a village, as well as a hill, in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland. The parish comprises Hobkirk, Southdean and Ruberslaw, combining Bedrule, Denholm and Minto churches. The poet John Leyden was a native of Denholm and described Ruberslaw thus: 'Dark Ruberslaw, that lifts his head sublime, / Rugged and hoary with the wrecks of time; / On his broad misty front the giant wears / The horrid furrows of ten thousand years.'
