Domus Dei
Domus Dei was an almshouse and hospice established in 1212 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK by Pierre des Roches, Bishop of Winchester. It is now also known as the Royal Garrison Church and is an English Heritage property and a listed Ancient Monument.
Portsea
Portsea is an area of the English city of Portsmouth, located on Portsea Island, within the ceremonial county of Hampshire. Engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel was born at Britain Street in 1806; writer Charles Dickens was born nearby at Landport, in Portsea, on 7 February 1812; the professor William Garnett was born in Portsea on December 30, 1850. The area was originally known as the "Common" and lay between the town of Portsmouth and the nearby Dockyard.
HMS Warrior (1860)
HMS Warrior was the first armour-plated, iron-hulled warship; built for the Royal Navy in response to the first ironclad warship, the French armoured frigate Gloire, launched in 1859. For a brief period the two Warrior-class ironclads were the most powerful warships in the world, being virtually impregnable to the naval guns of the time.
Portsea Island
Portsea Island is a small, flat and low lying island just off the south coast of England. The island is totally within, and contains a large proportion of, the city of Portsmouth. It has the third-largest population of any island in the British Isles, after the mainlands of Great Britain and Ireland. To the east lies Langstone Harbour, and to the west is Portsmouth Harbour. To the south it faces into the Solent.
University of Portsmouth
The University of Portsmouth is a university in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. It was created in 1992, from Portsmouth Polytechnic. The University is a member of the University Alliance.
Palmerston Forts, Portsmouth
The Palmerston Forts that encircle Portsmouth were built in response to the 1859 Royal Commission dealing with the perceived threat of a French invasion. The forts were intended to defend the Dockyard in Portsmouth. Construction was carried out by the Royal Engineers and civilian contractors (under Royal Engineer supervision). In addition to the newly constructed forts, extensive work was carried out on existing fortifications.
Anglican Diocese of Portsmouth
The Diocese of Portsmouth is an administrative division of the Church of England Province of Canterbury in England. The diocese covers south-east Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The see is in the City of Portsmouth in Hampshire, where the seat is located at the Cathedral Church of Saint Thomas of Canterbury.

Portsmouth Harbour railway station
Portsmouth Harbour railway station is a railway station in Portsmouth, England. It is situated beside Gunwharf Quays in the city's harbour, and is an important transport terminal, with a bus interchange and ferry services to Gosport and the Isle of Wight. The station currently has four platforms: numbered 1, 3, 4 and 5. It is managed by South West Trains. Platform 2 is no longer in use.
United Services Portsmouth F.C
United Services Portsmouth F.C. are a football club based in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. They were established in 1962 and were among the founding members of the Wessex League in 1986. In 2004, they changed their name from Portsmouth Royal Navy to their present name. They are currently members of Wessex League Division One.
Royal Naval Museum
The Royal Naval Museum is the museum of the history of the Royal Navy in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard section of HMNB Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. The museum is part of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. Its current Acting Director is Graham Dobbin.
Portsmouth Point
Portsmouth Point, or "Spice Island", is part of Old Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Hampshire, on the southern coast of England. The name Spice Island comes from the area's involvement in the trade of Caribbean spices. The area forms the eastern side of the narrow entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, facing Gosport on the western side. Historically, the Point lay outside the boundaries of Portsmouth, with access being controlled by various fortifications over the centuries.
Southsea Hoverport
Southsea Hoverport is adjacent to Clarence Pier in the Southsea area of Portsmouth in southern England. From here frequent hovercraft services leave for Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The journey time is quicker than the conventional boats that sail from Gunwharf Quay, elsewhere in Portsmouth, but the hovercraft are more prone to service curtailment in inclement weather.
King James's and Landport Gates
King James's and Landport Gates are two English Heritage sites in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. The ornate gateways were originally access points to Portsmouth through the town walls. The majority of the town walls were demolished in 1860.

St Ann's Church, HMNB Portsmouth
St Ann's Church is an Anglican chapel within Her Majesty's Naval Base Portsmouth. It is regarded as the spiritual home of the Royal Navy, and contains numerous memorials to men lost at sea. The original church was built in 1704, on the site of what is now Admiralty House. The present church was opened in 1786, and is built in red brick in Flemish bond. It was possibly designed by Marquand, a Navy Board surveyor, working under Samuel Wyatt at Admiralty House.
Clarence Pier
Clarence Pier is an amusement pier in Portsmouth, Hampshire. It is located by the Portsmouth Hovercraft terminal. Unlike most seaside piers in the UK, the pier does not extend very far out to sea, instead goes along the coast. The pier was originally constructed in 1861 and boasted a regular ferry service to the Isle of Wight. It was damaged by air raids during World War II and opened in its current form in 1961.
HMS Vernon (shore establishment)
HMS Vernon was a shore establishment or 'stone frigate' of the Royal Navy. Vernon was established on 26 April 1876 as the Royal Navy's Torpedo Branch and operated until 1 April 1996, when the various elements comprising the establishment were split up and moved to different commands.
The Hard Interchange
The Hard Interchange is a transport interchange in Portsmouth, southern England. It is located about a mile south-west from the city centre. It offers bus and coach transport, and the neighbouring Portsmouth Harbour Station provides trains to London, Cardiff and Brighton. It is a short walk from the Gunwharf Quays shopping and entertainment development. There are also two passenger ferry services running from The Hard Interchange.
School of Mathematics and Naval Construction
The Central School of Mathematics and Naval Construction was a short-lived shipbuilding college at Portsmouth Dockyard on the south coast of England. It was founded in 1848 but only lasted five years, until 1853. The first Principal was Joseph Woolley, who in 1864 would found the Royal School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in South Kensington that became part of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich in 1873.
Square Tower
The Square Tower is situated in Portsmouth, England The tower was built in 1494 as part fortifications and as a home to the governor of Portsmouth. In 1584 it was converted to a gunpowder store, the governor moving residence next to the Garrison Church. At the time of the royalist surrender of Portsmouth at the end of the Siege of Portsmouth during the English Civil War 1200 barrels of gunpowder were stored in the tower.

The Greyhound was a Public House (popularly known as "The Spotted Dog"), in High Street, Old Portsmouth, famous as the site of the murder of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham in 1628.
United Services Recreation Ground
The United Services Recreation Ground is a sports ground situated in Burnaby Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. The ground is also bordered to the north by Park Road, along which the railway line to Portsmouth Harbour and Gunwharf Quays overlooks the ground, and to the east by Anglesea Road. The southern end of the ground is dominated by the Officer's Club building, which overlooks the ground. The ground is owned by The Crown.
