Portsmouth
Portsmouth is the second largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south coast of England. Portsmouth is notable for being the United Kingdom's only island city; it is located mainly on Portsea Island. It is situated 64 miles south west from London and 19 miles south east of Southampton.
Tricorn Centre
The Tricorn Centre was a Brutalist shopping, nightclub and car park complex in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. It was designed by Owen Luder and Rodney Gordon and took its name from the site's shape which from the air resembled a Tricorne hat. Constructed in the mid-1960s, it was demolished in 2004. It was home to one of the first Virgin Megastores and housed the largest Laser Quest arena in Europe.
Whale Island, Hampshire
Whale Island is a small island in Portsmouth Harbour, close by Portsea Island. It is home to HMS Excellent, the oldest shore training establishment within the Royal Navy, and the location of the Navy Command Headquarters.

The Fortifications of Portsmouth are extensive, due to its strategic position on the English Channel and role as home to the Royal Navy. For this reason Portsmouth was by the 19th century one of the most fortified cities in the world. The fortifications have evolved over the centuries in response to changes in tactics and technology. The area covered by the defences has also increased.
The Breeze (Portsmouth)
The Breeze is a United Kingdom radio station, broadcasting to the cities of Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester. The station is operated by Celador and is part of The Breeze network of stations. It is aimed at upmarket 40-59 year olds, playing classic and contemporary easy listening music with a slight female bias. It broadcasts from Roman Landing in the Kingsway area of Southampton, sharing facilities with sister regional station 106 Jack FM.
HMS Excellent (shore establishment)
HMS Excellent is a Royal Navy "stone frigate" (shore establishment) sited on Whale Island near Portsmouth in Hampshire. HMS Excellent is itself part of the Maritime Warfare School, with a Headquarters at HMS Collingwood, although a number of lodger units are resident within the site, the principal of which is the Headquarters of Commander in Chief Fleet.
M275 motorway
The M275 is a 2-mile long, dual three-lane motorway in Hampshire, southern England. It is the principal route for entering and leaving Portsmouth. It continues as the A3 into Portsmouth, and meets the M27 at its northern terminus. From the motorway, there are scenic views over Portsmouth harbour, and the Sails of the South between the two carriageways. The M275 is one of few motorways in England which is not the responsibility of the Highways Agency.
Tipner
Tipner is a residential district of Portsmouth, located on the north western corner of Portsea Island in southern England. It includes a housing estate, built during the 1930s, that used to function as married quarters for the Royal Navy, a yachting club, allotments, a primary school, Waterside special school, and indoor and outdoor rifle ranges. There is a nearby sports centre at Alexandra Park. Tipner is bounded to the north and west by the M275 motorway and Tipner Lake.
Stamshaw
Stamshaw is a residential district of Portsmouth, located on the north western corner of Portsea Island in southern England. Much of it consists of dense rows of 'two up, two down' terraced housing built during the late 19th century and early 20th century for dockyard workers and their families. Due to the rising cost of houses in the south in recent years, it has become one of the key areas for first time buyers.
Sails of the South
The Trimast, commonly referred to as the Sails of the South, is a 43 m –high structure situated between two carriageways of the M275 motorway just outside Portsmouth, England. It was unveiled in March 2001 in order to enhance the entrance to the city as part of the regeneration scheme The Gateway Project. HGP Architects, offices located in Fareham less than 5 miles realised the scheme and installation. The structure is one of the tallest buildings in Portsmouth.
North End, Hampshire
North End is a mainly residential neighbourhood in the middle of Portsea Island in Portsmouth, England. It developed rapidly after a horse drawn tram route was opened between Portsmouth and Cosham. The area is composed of mainly late Victorian to early 20th century buildings. It is bounded to the west by Stamshaw, to the south by Buckland and Fratton, to the east by Copnor and by Hilsea to the north.
Royal Portsmouth Hospital
The Royal Portsmouth Hospital in Portsmouth, England was sited in Commercial Road close to the shopping centre and near to the Portsmouth Dockyard. The hospital closed on 1 October 1978, with all its facilities having been transferred to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham. The former hospital was demolished and the site developed by Sainsbury's, who now have a superstore there.
Tipner Lake
Tipner Lake forms the north eastern section of Portsmouth Harbour. Although referred to as Tipner Lake, it is not an actual lake. However the reclamation of land north of Horsea Island and the building of the M275 motorway in the early 1970s, which passes over a bridge to the west of the lake, can give the impression the body of water is no longer connected to the harbour. The lake is also connected to Portsbridge Creek.
Rudmore
Rudmore is a district located on the western shore of Portsea Island and is part of the city of Portsmouth, England. The area used to be a residential area, mainly catering for employees of the naval dockyard and their families. It was heavily damaged by bombing during World War II. In the late 1960s and early 1970s much of the area was cleared to make way for the M275 motorway and Portsmouth Continental Ferry Port. The parish church was St John the Baptist, and is now flats.
Landport
Landport is a district located near the centre of Portsea Island and is part of the city of Portsmouth, England. The district contains the main shopping area for Portsmouth. Before World War II the district was also a residential area, mainly catering for employees of the naval dockyard and their families. The district was heavily damaged by bombing during the war. After the war the decision was made that most of the remaining houses were substandard and the area was largely cleared.
City of Portsmouth Boys' School
The City of Portsmouth Boys' School, often referred to as CPBS (and locally as City Boys), is a single sex, Foundation and Comprehensive school for boys from the ages of eleven to sixteen in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. The school is located on London Road in the Portsmouth northern sub district of Hilsea. The current comprehensive school, established in 1975, was the product of an amalgamation of four separate secondary schools in the west of the City of Portsmouth.
City of Portsmouth Girls' School

Buckland, Portsmouth
Buckland is a residential area of the city of Portsmouth in the English county of Hampshire. Buckland, then known as Bocheland, was one of the three settlements on Portsea Island mentioned in the Domesday Book. The Manor of Bocheland was purchased by Jean de Gisors. De Gisors, a Norman lord who then founded Portsmouth on land at the southern end of the manor, in 1180. The area was extensively bombed during the Second World War.
HMS King Alfred (shore establishment 1994)
HMS King Alfred is a Royal Naval Reserve unit located on Whale Island, Portsmouth, within HMS Excellent in the vicinity of HMNB Portsmouth. The unit has a complement of over 200 reservists and provides training facilities to other Naval Reserve units. HMS King Alfred opened on 1 April 1994 and was commissioned on 8 June that year, replacing the recently closed units at HMS Sussex and HMS Wessex.
Navy Command Headquarters
Navy Command Headquarters (NCH) is the organisation responsible for the direction and management of the Royal Navy department of the United Kingdom in accordance with legislation and the requirements of the Ministry of Defence. The command is the base of the Fleet Commander (FLTCDR). It also provides forces by means of providing ships, personnel, aircraft and equipment in support of UK defence policy objectives.
Alexandra Park, Portsmouth
Alexandra Park, Portsmouth, was opened in 1907 and was a place of recreation for the people of Portsea Island. It provided lawns, flowers beds, paths and seats; it was an area to escape the toils of inner city life in the early twentieth century. The park was named after Queen Alexandra. At the time of the parks opening the site was already home to a bicycle track.

St Mary's Church, Portsea
St Mary's Church, Portsea is on the oldest church site on Portsea Island with a history stretching back to the 11th century. Aarchaeological research indicates that there may have been a church there in AD 850. Throughout its history the church has played an important role in the life of the island and especially the local communities of Fratton, Landport and Buckland. The current church was built in the 1880s and is a major landmark in the city.
