Exercise Tiger
Exercise Tiger, or Operation Tiger, was the code name for one in a series of large-scale rehearsals for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, which took place on Slapton Sands or Slapton Beach in Devon. Coordination and communication problems resulted in friendly fire deaths during the exercise, and an Allied convoy positioning itself for the landing was attacked by E-boats of the German Kriegsmarine, resulting in the deaths of 946 American servicemen.
Slapton, Devon
Slapton is a village in Devon, England. It is located near the A379 road between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, and lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). In 2001 the population of the civil parish of Slapton was 473. Slapton was recorded in the Domesday Book as Sladone.
Hallsands
Hallsands is a deserted village and beach in south Devon, England, in a precarious position between cliffs and the sea, between Beesands to the north and Start Point to the south.
Slapton Ley
Slapton Ley is a lake on the south coast of Devon, England, separated from Start Bay by a shingle beach, known as Slapton Sands. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in South West England. It is 1.5 miles long and is made up of two parts (the Lower Ley and the Higher Ley). The site is a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There is a large population of Cetti's Warbler at the site, and Bittern is resident. The rare plant Strapwort is found here.
Torcross
Torcross is a village in the South Hams district of Devon in England. It stands at grid reference SX822420 at the southern end of Slapton Sands, a narrow strip of land and shingle beach which separates the freshwater lake of Slapton Ley from Start Bay and carries the A379 coastal road north to Dartmouth.
Beesands
Beesands is located midway between Hallsands and Torcross in South Devon. Once a famous fishing village, it is now more important as a tourist destination with its setting on Start Bay. The local pub is famous for its crab sandwiches. There is an Anglican chapel in the village dedicated to St Andrew. Beesands is still a highly renowned fishing village but mainly concentrating on crab and lobster fishing through Britannia Fisheries.
Slapton Castle
Slapton Castle is an Iron Age hill fort situated close to Slapton in Devon, England. The fort is on a promontory on the eastern side of a hilltop at approximately 65 metres above sea level, overlooking Slapton Ley.
Stokenham
Stokenham is a village and civil parish in the English county of Devon. Stokenham civil parish includes the settlements of Torcross, Beesands, Hallsands, Kellaton, Kernborough, Dunstone, Beeson and Chillington as well as Stokenham itself. It forms part of the district of South Hams. To the east of the parish is Start Bay in the English Channel. The principal road in the parish is the A379 running between the nearest towns of Kingsbridge (to the west) and Dartmouth to the north.
