Cataract of Lodore
"The Cataract of Lodore" is a poem written in 1820 by the English poet Robert Southey which describes the Lodore Falls on the Watendlath Beck just above Derwent Water in Cumbria, England. The poem is a masterpiece of onomatopoeia, employing some of the most clever and evocative language ever used to describe a natural feature. When seen in its entire form, the body of the poem does look like a waterfall.
Newlands Valley
The Newlands Valley is in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. It is regarded as one of the most picturesque and quiet valleys in the national park, even though it is situated very close to the popular tourist town of Keswick and the busy A66 road. The valley forms part of the civil parish of Above Derwent, within the Borough of Allerdale.
Lodore Falls
Lodore Falls is a waterfall in Cumbria, England, close to Derwent Water and downstream from Watendlath. The falls are located on the beck that flows from Watendlath Tarn, and tumble more than 100 feet over a steep cascade into the Borrowdale Valley. Although it is spectacular in the rainy season,it can dry to a trickle in the summer. A famous onomatopoeic poem, Cataract of Lodore, written by Robert Southey in 1820, was inspired by the falls.
Ashness Bridge
Ashness Bridge is a traditional stone-built bridge on the single-track road from the Borrowdale road (B5289) to Watendlath, in the English Lake District. It is at grid reference NY270196, and is famous for being a fine viewpoint across Borrowdale towards Skiddaw. It or its predecessor may have been a packhorse bridge conveying packhorse traffic from Watendlath to Keswick.
Bowder Stone
The Bowder Stone is a large glacial erratic in Borrowdale. Cumbria, England at grid reference NY25401639. It is estimated to weigh around 2000 tons and is about 30'(9m) high, 50'(15m) across and 90'(27m) in circumference. There is a staircase allowing visitors to climb to the top, and has been since at least 1890. Its name most likely comes from the Norse god Odin's son, Baldr.
Barrow House, Cumbria
Barrow House is a late 18th century mansion situated on the eastern shore of Derwentwater in Borrowdale within the Lake District National Park, in the county of Cumbria, England. The house is a Grade II listed building which since the time of its construction has had various uses, it was originally a private dwelling and has since served as a hotel, a Youth Hostel run by the YHA and is now an independent hostel.
