Penistone rail accidents
|} Over the latter years of the 19th and early years of the 20th centuries Penistone in Yorkshire gained a name as an accident black-spot on Britain's railway network, indeed it could be said to hold the title of the worst accident black-spot in the country. The main line through the town was the Woodhead route of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway between Sheffield Victoria and Manchester, London Road.
Langsett Reservoir
Langsett Reservoir is in Yorkshire, England, near the villages of Langsett and Upper Midhope, on the edge of the Peak District National Park. The reservoir was constructed between 1898 and 1904, and is now managed by Yorkshire Water. Fed by the Little Don or Porter River, it is around a mile long, and supplies water for Sheffield and Barnsley via the Langsett Treatment Works.
Hartcliff Folly
The Hartcliff Folly (or Tower) near Penistone, South Yorkshire, England was built in 1856 by a linen merchant called Henry Richardson. At this time the Linen works were Barnsley’s largest industry. Richardson also built Hartcliffe Lodge before becoming the first Mayor of the borough of Barnsley. The tower looks as though it’s a Folly but it has stairs running through the middle of it and some believe that it was used as a viewing platform for game shooting.
Margery Hill
Margery Hill is a 546-metre hill on the Howden Moors in South Yorkshire, England. It lies towards the northern boundary of the Peak District National Park, between Langsett Reservoir to the northeast and Howden Reservoir to the southwest. The area is managed by the National Trust as part of their High Peak Estate.
Millhouse Green
Millhouse Green is a village on the north banks of the River Don on the A628 road west of Penistone in the English county of South Yorkshire. Administratively, Millhouse Green forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and Penistone civil parish.
St James' Church, Midhopestones
St James’ Church, Midhopestones is situated in the small rural hamlet of Midhopestones, just within the northern boundary of the City of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. Since April 1969 it has been a Grade II* listed building. St James is small church which is often referred to as a chapel, in fact it is situated on Chapel Lane. The church is officially dedicated to James the Less and not James the Greater although there has always been some confusion.
