Wright, New York
Wright is a town in Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2000 census. The town was named after governor Silas Wright. The Town of Wright is on the county's northeastern corner and is west of Albany.
Fort Carillon
Fort Carillon, the precursor of Fort Ticonderoga, was constructed by Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreuil, Governor of Canada, to protect Lake Champlain from a British invasion. Situated on the lake some fifteen miles south of Fort Saint Frédéric, it was built to prevent an attack on Canada and slow the advance of the enemy long enough for reinforcements to arrive.
Capture of Fort Ticonderoga
The Capture of Fort Ticonderoga occurred during the American Revolutionary War on May 10, 1775, when a small force of Green Mountain Boys led by Ethan Allen and Colonel Benedict Arnold overcame a small British garrison at the fort and looted the personal belongings of the garrison. Cannons and other armaments from the fort were transported to Boston and used to fortify Dorchester Heights and break the standoff at the Siege of Boston.
Fort Independence (Vermont)
Fort Independence was a fort built in 1775 on Mount Independence next to Lake Champlain. It was placed directly across from Fort Ticonderoga to help fortify the approach to Albany. The intent was to provide a combined, two-shore defense to approaching British Forces. The stone crafted Fort Ticonderoga, that was originally built as Fort Carillon by the French in 1756, was misplaced to effectively repel an attack from the north.
Mount Defiance (New York)
Mount Defiance is an 853 ft high hill on the New York side of Lake Champlain, in the northeastern United States. It is notable in that the hill militarily dominates both Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Independence, but it was deemed inaccessible so never fortified. Mount Defiance was previously known as Sugar Loaf. In the 1777 Siege of Fort Ticonderoga, the British army succeeded in positioning artillery on Mount Defiance, causing the Americans to withdraw from both forts without a fight.
Mount Independence (Vermont)
Mount Independence is a 306 ft high hill on the Vermont side of Lake Champlain, in the northeastern United States. It is a Vermont State Historic Site and was the site of Fort Independence, an American revolutionary war fortification built opposite Fort Ticonderoga. Unfortunately both forts were dominated, militarily, by the higher Mount Defiance. Mount Independence is located at {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:43|49|35|N|73|22|49|W|type:landmark_region:US-VT |primary |name= }}.
Battle on Snowshoes (1757)
The 1757 Battle on Snowshoes was a skirmish fought between Rogers' Rangers and French and Indian troops during the French and Indian War on January 21, 1757. The battle was given this name because the British combatants were wearing snowshoes. On January 21, 1757, Captain Robert Rogers and a band of his rangers were on a scouting expedition near Fort Carillon on Lake Champlain when they were ambushed by a mixed troop of French regulars, Canadian militiamen, and Indians.
