West Knighton, Dorset
West Knighton is a village in south Dorset, England, situated three miles southeast of the county town of Dorchester. It has an 11th-century church, a village pub and a population of 415.
Ringstead Bay
Ringstead Bay and the small village of Ringstead are located on the coast in Dorset, southern England. They are accessible by way of a private road that you have to pay £5 to be able to use with a car park at the end near the sea. There is an alternative car park that is free. This one is a national trust area and there is access to the sea by a 15- to 20-minute walk and there is also a picnic area. The area lies on the Jurassic Coast and is known for its natural beauty and fossils.
Osmington White Horse
The Osmington White Horse is a hill figure sculpted in 1808 into the limestone Osmington hill just north of Weymouth called the South Dorset Downs, within the parish of Osmington. The figure is of King George III, who regularly visited Weymouth, and made it 'the first resort', riding on his horse, and can be seen for miles around. It is 280 feet long and 323 feet high in size and is best viewed from the A353 road. The television show Challenge Anneka restored the horse in 1989.
White Nothe
White Nothe (meaning "White Nose") is a chalk headland on the English Channel coast at the eastern end of Ringstead Bay, east of Weymouth in Dorset, England. The area is well known for its geology and fossils. Its flanks are the result of prehistoric landslides and the inaccessible slopes of the undercliff provide a secluded wildlife habitat. There is a zigzag path up the cliff, believed to be one of the locations used by smugglers in the book Moonfleet.
Bran Point
Bran Point is a small headland on the Dorset coast in southern England, about half way between the small villages of Ringstead to the east and Osmington Mills to the west. There is a picturesque cliff-top path between the two villages via Bran Point. The name derives from the brown colouring of the rock forming the cliffs of the headland, caused in part by residual oil deposits. The geology of the area is particularly interesting.
Poxwell
Poxwell, is a hamlet in South Dorset located approximately 6 miles east of Weymouth. The current population of the village is around 50. The name originates from the ‘Pokes well’ – a well dating from the period when occupied by the Romans in the 1st century which is located on a hillside in the village. In 1989, English Heritage excavated a site nearby to this and found ruins of a settlement dating to around the same period, in which various artefacts were found.
Black Head, Dorset
Black Head a headland on the south coast of England, to the east of Weymouth in Dorset. It lies on the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape known for its geology. Fossils can be found in the area. The headland faces out over to the Isle of Portland. It is so-called because of the black colouring of the cliffs at this point. To the west along the coast are Redcliff Point and Bowleaze Cove. To the east are the coastal village of Osmington Mills and beyond that Bran Point.
Perry Ledge
Perry Ledge is a reef west of Ringstead in Dorset, England. The ledge consists of limestone dating from the Jurassic period and is exposed at low tide. It is located close to Bran Point.
