Windermere
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice at the start of the current interglacial. It has been one of the country’s most popular places for holidays and summer homes since the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway's branch line in 1847. It is in the county of Cumbria and entirely within the Lake District National Park. Windermere has also been the venue for the Great North Swim since 2008.
Belle Isle (Windermere)
Belle Isle is the largest of 18 islands on Windermere, a mere in the English Lake District, and the only one ever to have been inhabited. It is 1 km in length. Belle Isle House was built in 1774 to designs by John Plaw. It is unusual in that it is circular in plan, built of brick, three floors high with a four column portico. The Roman governor at Ambleside built a villa on the island. In 1250 it was the seat of the district's Lord of the Manor.
Windermere Ferry
The Windermere Ferry is a vehicular cable ferry which crosses Windermere, a lake in the English county of Cumbria. The route forms part of the B5285 road and crosses the lake at about its midpoint, from Ferry Nab in Bowness-on-Windermere to Far Sawrey, a distance of some 1,500 feet . The current ferry boat, named Mallard, was built in 1990 and can carry up to 18 cars and over 100 passengers. There has been a ferry at the site of the current Windermere Ferry for more than 500 years.
Old Codgers Cottage
Old Codgers Cottage was built in 1847 by Augustus Pugin who was responsible for interior design and rebuilding of the Palace of Westminster. He was commissioned by the Kendal and Windermere Railway company to build the properties for their staff when the new Windermere railway station was being built. The cottage is situated off Beech Street, Windermere.
Windermere Steamboat Museum
The Windermere Steamboat Museum was opened in 1977 by George Pattinson, a local builder and boat collector, and was located on the former Sand and Gravel Wharf between Bowness-on-Windermere and the town of Windermere, on the eastern shore of Windermere in Cumbria, England. In 2007, the museum was taken over by the Lakeland Arts Trust, a local charity, in order to restore the collection and redevelop the site. The Trust also runs Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Blackwell and the Museum of Lakeland Life.

Brant Fell
Brant Fell is a hill in the English Lake District, near Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches 629 feet and Wainwright's route is an anticlockwise circuit which leaves Bowness along the path of the Dales Way. He commends its "fine prospect of Windermere".
