Wilthorpe
Wilthorpe is a village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. Bisected by the A635 Huddersfield Road, Wilthorpe has several small shops and infant and junior schools located on Greenfoot Lane, as well as an ATS garage and a dentist on Huddersfield Road. Wilthorpe sits in the S75 area of Barnsley, along with the neighbouring areas of Pogmoor, Gawber, and Mapplewell.
Dearne and Dove Canal
The Dearne and Dove Canal ran for almost ten miles through South Yorkshire, England from Swinton to Barnsley through nineteen locks, rising 127 feet . The canal also had two short branches, the Worsbrough branch and the Elsecar branch, both about two miles long with reservoirs at the head of each. The Elsecar branch also has another six locks. The only tunnel was bypassed by a cutting in 1840. The canal was created mainly to carry cargo from the extensive coal mining industry in the area.
Barnsley Town Hall
Barnsley Town Hall is the seat of local government in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley. The Borough's local government was last reorganised in 1986 when the South Yorkshire County Council was abolished. The former County Council was located in offices on Kendray Street, the main part of which is due for demolition in 2007 or 2008 as part of a major redevelopment programme.
Barnsley and District Tramway
The Barnsley and District Electric Traction Co was an electric tramway network serving the town of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The tramway was a subsidiary of the British Electric Traction and services begun on 31 October 1902. In early 1898, three companies had applied for local tramway systems, the Barnsley Corporation applied in 1900 for a larger network than it finally built.
Shaw Lane (cricket ground)
Shaw Lane is a cricket ground in Barnsley. It hosted one first-class match, in August 1862 between Yorkshire and an All England XI, a game won by the England XI despite being bowled out for just 47 in their first innings. More recently, it hosted four Benson and Hedges Cup one day matches featuring Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1975 and 1978.
