Melrose, Bronx

Melrose is primarily a residential neighborhood geographically located in the southwestern section of the borough of The Bronx in New York City. Predominantly German-American in the 19th century it is home to the Haffen Building and was home to Haffen Brewing Company. The German population waned especially post WWII. The neighborhood until the 60s was mostly Irish and Italian. It is now primarily Latino. It adjoins the business and one-time theater area known as the Hub.

The Melrose (also known as Melrose – East 162nd Street) Metro-North Railroad station serves the residents of the Melrose section of The Bronx via the Harlem Line. It is 6.1 miles from Grand Central Terminal and is located in an open cut beneath Park Avenue at its intersection with East 162nd Street, six tenths of a mile from Yankee Stadium. Service at Melrose is limited; trains stop every 30 minutes during rush hours, every two hours mid-days and evenings.

The Hub is at the retail, theater, and restaurant heart of the South Bronx, New York. It is located where four roads converge: East 149th Street, Willis, Melrose and Third Avenue. East 161st Street is a short, major thoroughfare in the southern portion of the Bronx. The road is 1.6 mile (2.57 kilometres) long and is the best access to the Yankee Stadium. The road begins at an intersection with Jerome Avenue, a major thoroughfare in the Bronx, and Woodycrest Avenue, a one-way street in the Bronx. The road is one of the widest in the Bronx, until the Sheridan Avenue intersection, where the divided highway merges. East 161st Street ends at Elton Avenue.

143rd Street (IRT Third Avenue Line)

143rd Street was a station on the demolished IRT Third Avenue Line. This station was also served by trains of the IRT Second Avenue Line until June 11, 1940. The station was originally opened on May 23, 1886. It had two tracks and one island platform. The next stop to the north was either 149th Street or Jackson Avenue. The next stop to the south was 138th Street for all trains. This station closed on May 12, 1955.

149th Street was an express station on the demolished IRT Third Avenue Line, at "The Hub". The station was originally opened on June 16, 1887. It was built three tracks and two island platforms. The next stop to the north was 156th Street. The next stop to the south was 143rd Street. When the line south of here was closed on May 12, 1955, 149th Street station became the southern terminus of the Third Avenue Line.

Alfred E. Smith Career and Technical Education High School

Bronx Opera House

The Bronx Opera House is a theatre built in 1913 at 436 East 149th street in Bronx, New York. It was one of several theaters to come into the area that became known as the Hub. It seated 1,900 on three levels and in box seats. Performers included Will Rogers in 1914, the Marx Brothers, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Julia Marlowe, Ethel Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore, David Warfield. Haffen Building

Haffen Building is a historic landmark constructed in 1901-1902 in the South Bronx, New York City. Built for Matthias Haffen's family, founder of the brewery that grew into Haffen Brewing Company, it is located at 138th Street between Third Avenue and Willis Avenue.
