North Wales
North Wales is the northernmost unofficial region of Wales. Retail, transport and educational infrastructure are centred around the largest town of Wrexham, with other important areas including Rhyl, Llandudno and the small city of Bangor. It is bordered to the south by the counties of Ceredigion and Powys in Mid Wales and to the east by the counties of Shropshire in the West Midlands and Cheshire in North West England.
Frongoch internment camp
Frongoch internment camp at Frongoch in Merionethshire, Wales was a makeshift place of imprisonment during the First World War. Until 1916 it housed German prisoners of war in an abandoned distillery and crude huts, but in the wake of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, Ireland, the German prisoners were moved and it was used as a place of internment for approximately 1,800 Irish prisoners, among them such notables as Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith.
Canolfan Tryweryn
Canolfan Tryweryn is the National White Water Centre for Wales, and is based near Bala in North Wales. It developed the first commercial white water rafting operation in the UK in 1986, and since then has grown to become the largest and most well-respected rafting organisation in the UK. The centre is home to paddlesport National Governing Body Canoe Wales and Rescue 3 (UK) who run a number of Safety & Rescue courses.
Frongoch railway station
Frongoch railway station was a railway station on the Great Western Railway's Bala Ffestiniog Line in Wales. It closed to passenger services on 2 January 1960 and freight services on 27 January 1961. The station building and signal box are now in use as a private residence. It was converted to a holiday home during the early 1970s when it was rescued from complete dilapidation. Initially the signal box was converted and the local council agreed that 2½ people could sleep in it.
Bala (New) railway station
Bala railway station was a railway station on the Great Western Railway's Bala Ffestiniog Line in Wales. When it opened it replaced the first Bala station which had been sited farther away from the village on the Ruabon Barmouth Line.
Tyddyn Bridge Halt railway station
Tyddyn Bridge Halt railway station was a railway station on the Great Western Railway's Bala Ffestiniog Line in Wales. It closed in 1960. The site of the halt is now covered by the dam of Llyn Celyn reservoir, the construction of which led to the closure of the line in 1961 except the Bala to Bala Junction section. Christ Church, Bala
Christ Church, Bala, is in Bala, Gwynedd, Wales. It is an active Anglican church in the deanery of Penllyn & Edeyrnion, the archdeaconry of Wrexham, and the diocese of St Asaph. The church was designated a Grade II listed building on 13 December 2001. The first church to be built on the site was in 1811. The present church was built between 1853 and 1857. The stalls and prayer desks were designed by the Chester architect John Douglas.
Maes Tegid
Maes Tegid is a community playing field in Bala, Wales. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of Bala Town. The stadium holds 3,000 people, with 304 seats.
