Lost, Aberdeenshire

Lost; population: less than two dozen; grid reference NJ349132 or on 1869 map is a tiny hamlet in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It lies 40 miles west of Aberdeen in the Cairngorm mountains. The hamlet is situated near the village of Bellabeg where the Water of Nochty feeds into the River Don. Despite its small population, the people of Lost are famed for their strength and honour. The name comes from the Gaelic word for inn (taigh òsda); today the hamlet has a few houses, a war memorial and a farm.

Strathdon is an area in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is situated in the strath of the River Don, 45 miles west of Aberdeen in the Highlands. The main village in the strath is also called Strathdon, although it was originally called Invernochty due to its location at the confluence of the River Don and the River Nochty. Strathdon is an informal geographical area, this means there are no precise boundaries in terms of where it begins or ends.

Doune of Invernochty

The Doune of Invernochty is an earthwork castle in Scotland. The name is a corruption of Dùn Inbhir Nochdaidh which means, in Gaelic, the "Fort of Invernochty (confluence of River Nochty). " Dating from around 800 AD it is a moated motte and was a stronghold of the Mormaer of Mar and is thus sometimes described as the 'Citadel of Mar'. The nearest villages are Bellabeg and Strathdon, the latter used to be called Invernochty.
