Richard Trevithick

Richard Trevithick (13 April 1771 – 22 April 1833) was a British inventor and mining engineer from Cornwall. Born in the mining heartland of Cornwall, Trevithick was immersed in mining and engineering from a young age. The son of a mining captain, he performed poorly in school, but went on to be an early pioneer of steam powered road and rail transport.

Merthyr Tydfil

Merthyr Tydfil is a town in Wales, with a population of about 30,000. Although once the largest town in Wales, it is now ranked as the 14th largest urban area in Wales. It also gives its name to a county borough, which is one of the 22 unitary authorities in Wales, with a population of around 55,000. It is located in the historic county of Glamorgan. It is often referred to simply as 'Merthyr'.

Glamorganshire Canal

The Glamorganshire Canal was a canal in south Wales, UK, running from Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff. Construction started in 1790, and the 25 miles (40 km) of canal was fully opened by 1794. Its primary purpose was to enable the Merthyr iron industries to transport their goods, and it later served the coal industry.

Cyfarthfa Castle

Cyfarthfa Castle is the former home of the Crawshay family, historical ironmasters of Cyfarthfa Ironworks in Park, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. Despite appearing superficially to be a fortified building it is a house built in the style of a large mansion. The castle stands in 158-acre of parkland, now called Cyfarthfa Park and maintained by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. It is reputedly haunted from a ghost that goes upstairs by the music classroom.

Penydarren Ironworks

Penydarren Ironworks was the fourth of the great ironworks established at Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. Built in 1784 by the brothers Samuel Homfray, Jeremiah Homfray, and Thomas Homfray, all sons of Francis Homfray of Stourbridge. Their father, Francis, for a time managed a nail warehouse there for Ambrose Crowley. Most of the family were involved in trade as ironmasters or ironmongers (in this context meaning a manufacturer of iron goods).

Penydarren Park

Penydarren Park is the home stadium for Merthyr Town F.C. in Merthyr Tydfil. It has a capacity of 10,000. A housing estate next to it also carries the name of the stadium. It was also the home of the town's former club, Merthyr Tydfil F.C. and it was also the home of Merthyr Tydfil RLFC between 1907 and 1910. There are plans for Merthyr to move to a new stadium on the edge of the town. The stadium would be part of the new 'Merthyr Village' development and have a capacity of around 12,000.

It consists principally of the Gurnos Estate, a large housing estate established by Merthyr Tydfil Council in the early 1950s and expanded over many years. St Tydfil's Hospital

Saint Tydfil's Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales started out life as part of the old Merthyr Workhouse, which was built in 1853. At this time it was known as 'The Infirmary', a name that it informally retained well into the latter part of the 20th century. It consisted of four men's rooms, four women's rooms, one 'lying-in' ward (Maternity) and two recovery rooms. There was accommodation for 65 patients. A House Surgeon was appointed in 1853 with a salary of £25.

Penydarren

The area is most notable as being the site of a 1st century Roman fort, and during the Industrial Revolution it housed Penydarren Ironworks the third largest of the great Merthyr works. Penydarren was also used by Richard Trevithick as the location for his experiments into steam locomotion. The community and ward has a population of 5,253.
