The school is affiliated with the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, although it accepts students of all backgrounds. It is the second-oldest Baptist school in North Carolina. The University offers both Associate's and Bachelor's degrees in 40 academic disciplines and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Meherrin River
The Meherrin River is a 92-mile long river in the U.S. states of Virginia and North Carolina. It begins in central Virginia, about 50 miles northwest of Emporia, and flows roughly east-southeast into North Carolina, where it joins the larger Chowan River. A twenty-foot-high dam on the river creates a reservoir in Emporia. For most of its length, the Meherrin is not large enough for commercial traffic. It widens somewhat between Murfreesboro, North Carolina and the Chowan.
Parker's Ferry
Parker's Ferry is a cable ferry located on the Meherrin River in Hertford County, North Carolina. The ferry is operated by a contractor for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The ferry is located in on Parkers Ferry Road at the north end of the Meherrin River & Parkers Fishery Road at the south end of the Meherrin River (Hertford SR 1306). It is one of three remaining cable ferries left in operation in North Carolina. The others are the Sans Souci Ferry and Elwell Ferry.

The museum's collections include an assortment of glassware, household domestic items, farm tools and equipment, period furniture, and many other artifacts.

Garrison Stadium is a 5,000-seat college football stadium located in Murfreesboro, North Carolina. The stadium has been the home of the Hawks football team of Chowan University since the sixties. Beginning with the 2008 athletic year, the Hawks will compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) as a football-only member.
Roanoke-Chowan Hospital
Roanoke-Chowan Hospital is a hospital located in Ahoskie, North Carolina. It is a part of the University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina (UHSEC). In the 1930's, James David Early of nearby Early's Station community was a major supporter of building a hospital in Ahoskie and committed land for the project. After his death, his son, James Bertram Early, Sr. , completed the transaction donating the land. In 1948, the hospital was the first to use the Hill-Burton Act for construction.
