Upton, New York

Upton, New York is a hamlet on Long Island in the town of Brookhaven. It is the home of Brookhaven National Laboratory, and a National Weather Service station. Upton is located in Suffolk County, New York in the USA. The town is so named because it was the site of the U.S. Army's Camp Upton, which was active from 1917 until 1920, and again from 1940 until 1946. During World War II, the camp was rebuilt primarily as an induction center for draftees.

Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is one of only two operating heavy-ion colliders, and the only spin-polarized proton collider ever built. By using RHIC to collide ions traveling at relativistic speeds, physicists study the primordial form of matter that existed in the universe shortly after the Big Bang.

National Synchrotron Light Source II

The National Synchrotron Light Source II, or NSLS-II, is currently being constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory and will cost $912,000,000USD. The NSLS-II will replace the current NSLS. Construction of NSLS-II began in 2009 and operations are expected in 2015. NSLS-II will be a new state-of-the-art, medium-energy electron storage ring operating at 3 GeV. It is designed to produce x-rays more than 10,000 times brighter than the current NSLS.
