Broom Hill is a small village in County Durham, England. It is situated to the north of Consett, near Ebchester and Medomsley.
High Westwood
High Westwood is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated a few miles to the north of Consett, near Ebchester and Hamsterley. Once a thriving village, due to the local coalmining, it is now little more than a few private houses, and the former Westwood County Junior Mixed and Infant School is now a housing complex where the houses are named after the rows of colliery houses that were demolished in the early 1970s.
Ebchester
Ebchester is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north of Consett and to the south east of Whittonstall. The parish church, which is dedicated to St. Ebba is of ambiguous origin, being of partly Norman construction with a foundation, described as being pre-Conquest. Much of the stone in the walls and doorway had been taken from Roman rubble of the fort of Vindomora, on which most of the village is located.

Medomsley is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north-east of Consett. The Church, which is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene appears to have been started in the mid 12th century, extended in the late 13th century and, as with many churches, restored in the late 19th century. Low Westwood
Overview[edit] Low Westwood is an idyllic North Durham hamlet which joins onto the small village of Hamsterley. Low Westwood is probably best known for its sizeable rest home. The River Derwent flows at the bottom of the valley, and separates the nearby villages of Blackhall Mill and Chopwell. Although situated in County Durham, Low Westwood has a Newcastle-upon-Tyne postcode (NE17). Low Westwood is approximately 800 yards from the Roman village of Ebchester.
Hamsterley, Consett
Hamsterley is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north of Consett. Known until recently as Hamsterley Colliery due to the large Mining Colliery which was situated to the south of the village along the southern banks of River Derwent. The Colliery was halfway between Hamsterley and High Westwood. One of two villages of this name in County Durham, it should not be confused with the larger village of Hamsterley, near Bishop Auckland, 20 miles to the south.
High Spen
High Spen is an old mining village in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. There is an entrance to Chopwell Wood, whose forest festival and Christmas Trees attract many visitors to the village every year. High Spen has one pub, called The Bute Arms, and two Working Men's clubs. There is also a Primary school, called High Spen Primary School, and a Comprehensive school, called Hookergate. High Spen also is home to St Patrick's C of E Church.
Derwentcote Steel Furnace
Derwentcote Steel Furnace, Rowlands Gill, near Newcastle, England, built in 1720, is an example of an early cementation furnace which produced high grade steel. It was restored in 1990 by English Heritage.
