Smilovice (Frýdek-Místek District)
is a village in Frýdek-Místek District, Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic, on the Ropičanka River. It has a population of 581 (2001 census), Poles constitute 26.4% of the population. It lies in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia. Former Prime Minister of Poland and current president of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek was born here. It has a population of 1,064 (2005). The village of Žukov was first mentioned in the document of Pope Gregory IX issued for Benedictine abbey in Tyniec in 1229 as Zukow. Politically it belonged then to the Duchy of Opole and Racibórz, and since 1290 to the Duchy of Teschen.
