River Ythan

The Ythan is a river in the north-east of Scotland rising at Wells of Ythan near the village of Ythanwells and flowing south-eastwards through the towns of Fyvie, Methlick and Ellon before flowing into the North Sea near Newburgh, in Formartine. The name is believed to have originated from an old Pictish word of Brythonic origin meaning gorse.

Sands of Forvie

The Sands of Forvie is a nature reserve north of Newburgh in Aberdeenshire in the northeast of Scotland. Forvie National Nature Reserve has the fifth largest sand dune system in Britain, and the least disturbed by human activity. The dune system is an integral part of the Ythan Estuary and separated by the estuary from Balmedie beach. The reserve contains large areas of sandy foreshore, mobile and fixed dunes, dune pasture and lowland heath and the successional development of vegetation.

Newburgh, Aberdeenshire

Newburgh is a coastal village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The village dates to 1261 AD, when Lord Sinclair wanted to establish a chapel in the area. Originally built as a school, somewhat later the chapel of Holy Rood was established.

Ythan Estuary

The Ythan Estuary is the tidal component of the Ythan River, emptying into the North Sea 19 kilometres north of Aberdeen, Scotland. The estuary’s tidal action extends a 7 kilometres inland and has characteristic widths of between 250 metres and 780 metres . Besides the tidal channel there are interfaces to the upland dunes including mudflats, sand beaches and shingle flats.

Newburgh On Ythan Golf Club

Newburgh On Ythan Golf Club was founded in 1888 by John Udny of Udny and a band of ‘founding fathers’ and is one of the oldest golf courses in Scotland. In 1897, Crown Prince Vajiravudh of Siam stayed for one month at the village hotel The Udny Arms, and spent his time learning to play golf on the links course. He was instructed by the professional of the day.

Knockhall Castle

Knockhall Castle is an historic Scottish castle near to Newburgh, Aberdeenshire. It was built by Lord Sinclair of Newburgh in 1565. It was purchased by Clan Udny, who moved into the castle in 1634. The building was damaged in 1639 when taken by the Earl Marischal for the Covenanters, but was later returned to Udny hands. The Clan remained in the castle until 1734, when an accidental fire gutted the building and the Clan moved back to their other property, Udny Castle.

Cotehill Loch

Cotehill Loch is a loch located in Scotland in the Aberdeenshire area, approximately one mile (1.5 km) northwest of the coastal town of Collieston and two miles (3 km) east of the Ythan Estuary. The area the loch covers is 2.7ha. A survey carried out in 2002 by ecologists from the University of Glasgow found that the eutrophication of the water was leading to a "decline in plant species diversity".
