Silent Valley Reservoir

The Silent Valley Reservoir is a reservoir located in the Mourne Mountains near Kilkeel, County Down in Northern Ireland. It supplies most of the water for County Down, surrounding counties and most of Belfast. It is owned and maintained by Northern Ireland Water Limited. The reservoir was built between 1923 and 1933 by a workforce of over one thousand men, nine of whom died.

Tullaghmurray Lass

The Tullaghmurray Lass was a prawn fishing boat based in Kilkeel, County Down, Northern Ireland. On 14 February 2002 the Tullaghmurray Lass left Kilkeel Harbour to fish for prawns. When the boat failed to return when expected a huge search mission was organised involving local fishing boats, the RNLI, HM Coastguard, the Royal Navy and the Irish Navy. The extensive search continued for two months, the issue being raised in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Slieve Binnian

Slieve Binnian (from the Irish: Sliabh Binneáin) is the third highest mountain in Northern Ireland at 747 metres . The name comes from the rocky tors situated around the top of the mountain. These very rugged crest of rocky tors makes it easy to identify in views around the Mourne Mountains. To the south west of the mountain is Wee Binnian and to the west is the Silent Valley Reservoir. The Mourne Wall also crosses over Slieve Binnian.

Binnian Tunnel

The Binnian Tunnel was constructed between 1948 and 1952 and is located in the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland. The main purpose of the tunnel is to divert water from the Annalong river to the Silent Valley Reservoir underneath a number of mountains including Slieve Binnian, which the tunnel was named after. A high degree of engineering skills were employed in the building of the tunnel. Two teams of people worked at each end of the tunnel and met in the middle.
