Middlesex County, Massachusetts
Middlesex County, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is the twenty-third most populous county in the United States and the most populous county in New England. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,503,085, making it more populous than any other New England state except for Connecticut. The center of population of Massachusetts is in Natick, Middlesex County.
Assabet River
The Assabet River is a small river about 20 miles west of Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The river is 34.4 miles long. OARS: the Organization for the Assabet, Sudbury and Concord Rivers, headquartered in West Concord, Massachusetts, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, protection, and enhancement of the natural and recreational features of these three rivers and their watershed. The Assabet and Sudbury Rivers merge in Concord to become the Concord River.
Old North Bridge
The North Bridge, often colloquially called the Old North Bridge, is a historical site in the Battle of Concord, the first day of battle in the American War of Independence. The current wooden pedestrian bridge is a replica of the one that stood at the day of the battle. The Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Concord (MCI-Concord) is a medium security prison for men located in Concord, Massachusetts in the United States. Opened in 1878, it is the oldest running state prison for men in Massachusetts. This prison is under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Department of Correction.
Estabrook Woods
The Estabrook Woods is a wild tract of more than 1,200 acres of woodland, hills, ledge, and swamp two miles (3 km) north of the Town of Concord. It is the largest contiguous and undeveloped woodland within thirty miles of Boston. However, the woods have a history of human disturbance dating back to the Algonquian Native Americans who used controlled burning to clear tracts of land.
Middlesex School
Middlesex School is an independent secondary school for grades 9 - 12 located in Concord, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1901 by a Roxbury Latin School alumnus, Frederick Winsor, who headed the school until 1937. Winsor set up a National Scholarship Program for the school, the first of its kind for a secondary school. In 1974 it became co-educational. The school is a member of the Independent School League and is one of five schools collectively known as St. Grottlesex.
Northeastern Correctional Center
The Northeastern Correctional Center is a minimum security/pre-release state prison in Massachusetts that opened in 1932. The NECC sits on 300 acres of farmland and provides many inmates with work opportunities prior to being released from prison. The facility is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA), managed by the Massachusetts Department of Correction, and overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety.
Punkatasset Hill
Punkatasset Hill is a hill located in Concord, Massachusetts. It is one of the highest points in the town at 289 feet . The hill was originally known as Broad-topped Hill by the native Indians and was cultivated and farmed from the 17th century on. In 1775, as the British troops marched into Concord, the Concord Minutemen took position atop Punkatasset Hill. On the hill they were met with reinforcements from the surrounding towns and the number of soldiers grew to at least 400.
