Southern Pines (Amtrak station)

2005 U.S. Open (golf)
The 2005 United States Open Championship was the 105th U.S. Open, played from June 13 to June 19 at Pinehurst Resort Course No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The U.S. Open returned to Pinehurst No. 2 for the first time since 1999, when Payne Stewart won his second U.S. Open four months before his death. Six years was the shortest gap between U.S. Opens at the same site since 1946. Michael Campbell won his first career major in a surprising collapse by two of the best players in the world.
1999 U.S. Open (golf)
The 1999 United States Open Championship was the 99th U.S. Open, held from June 17–20 at Pinehurst Resort Course No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Payne Stewart won his second U.S. Open and third major championship with a 15-foot par putt on the final hole to defeat Phil Mickelson by one stroke. Stewart would not get a chance to defend his title in 2000 as he died less than five months later in a plane crash.
2007 U.S. Women's Open Golf Championship
The 2007 U.S. Women's Open was played from June 28 to July 1 at the Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. It was won by Cristie Kerr by two strokes over Angela Park and Lorena Ochoa. The victory was the first major championship won by Kerr.

The Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club is a country club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The club hosted the U.S. Women's Open in 1996, 2001, and 2007, yet staged the last Titleholders Championship in 1972. Those tournaments were won by Annika Sörenstam, Karrie Webb, Cristie Kerr, and Sandra Palmer respectively.
