Beaufort is a town in and the county seat of Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. Established in 1709, Beaufort is the third-oldest town in North Carolina. On February 1, 2012, Beaufort was ranked as "America's Coolest Small Town" by readers of Budget Travel Magazine. The population was 4,189 at the 2008 census. It is sometimes confused with a city of the same name in South Carolina; the two are distinguished by different pronunciations.

Siege of Fort Macon
The Siege of Fort Macon took place from March 23 to April 26, 1862, on the Outer Banks of Carteret County, North Carolina. It was part of Union Army General Ambrose E. Burnside's North Carolina Expedition during the American Civil War. In late March, Major General Burnside’s army advanced on Fort Macon, a casemated masonry fort that commanded the channel to Beaufort, 35 miles (56 km) southeast of New Bern.

Shackleford Banks
Shackleford Banks is a barrier island system on the coast of Carteret County, North Carolina. It contains a herd of feral horses, scallop, crabs and various sea animals, including summer nesting by loggerhead turtles. It is a tourist and camping site, though only a limited number of people may stay at any given time. Shackleford Banks is located in Harkers Island Township, and is a part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Crystal Coast
The Crystal Coast is an 85-mile stretch of coastline in North Carolina that extends from the Cape Lookout National Seashore, which includes 56 miles of protected beaches, westward to the New River. It is also known as the Southern Outer Banks (SOBX) and is a popular area with tourists and second-home owners in the summer. The absolute boundaries of this coast are often disputed, but the main area includes all the major Carteret County beaches (those on Bogue Banks, which face south).
North River (North Carolina)
The North River is a tidal river, approximately 18 miles (29 km) long, in eastern North Carolina, the United States. It forms the boundary between Currituck and Camden counties. The river rises in the Great Swamp, 10 miles east of Elizabeth City, North Carolina at the juncture of Indiantown Creek. The river's mouth, where it is approximately four miles wide, is in Albemarle Sound, midway between the mouth of the Pasquotank River to the west and the south end of Currituck Sound to the east.

Barden Inlet
Barden Inlet is the southernmost of the Outer Banks water inlets. Located just northwest of Cape Lookout in the U.S. state of North Carolina, the inlet connects Onslow Bay of the Atlantic Ocean with Core Sound. It separates the Shackleford Banks from the Core Banks. Barden Inlet was opened by the 1933 Outer Banks Hurricane, separating the Shackleford Banks from South Core Banks. The new channel gave Harkers Island fishermen a new, direct access route to offshore fishing grounds.

Diamond City, North Carolina
Diamond City was a settlement on the eastern end of Shackleford Banks, in Carteret County, North Carolina. Due to a hurricane that struck in August 1899, the approximately 500 residents of the settlement and island decided to move. The last of the residents had left by 1902, and even relocated houses to nearby places such as Harkers Island and Morehead City.

The Back Sound is a large and shallow body of water in eastern North Carolina. It located between the mainland of Carteret County and Harkers Island to the north, and Shackleford Banks to the south. WTKF is a radio station broadcasting a talk radio format. Licensed to Atlantic, North Carolina, USA, it serves the Morehead City-New Bern-Jacksonville area. WTKF signed on in 1992 as North Carolina's first FM talk-formatted station. It grew from the now-defunct WBTB/1400, which was licensed to Beaufort, North Carolina. As the first radio station in North Carolina to broadcast a talk format on FM radio, it boasted the slogan "First In Talk".
