Karangahake Gorge
The Karangahake Gorge lies between the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges, at the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island. A sharply winding canyon, it was formed by the Ohinemuri River. State Highway 2 passes through this gorge between the towns of Paeroa, Waikino and Waihi. This road is the main link between the Waikato region and the Bay of Plenty. The East Coast Main Trunk Railway used to run through the gorge until it was bypassed by the Kaimai Deviation.
Waikino
Waikino is a small town situated in the North Island of New Zealand nestled in the Southern end of a gorge alongside the Ohinemuri River, between Waihi and the Karangahake Gorge. The Waikino district lies at the base of the ecologically sensitive Coromandel Peninsula with its vast tracts of lush subtropical rainforests, steep ravines and fast moving rivers and streams. "Waikino" is Māori and means "water in a gorge'
Golden Cross mine
The Golden Cross mine was a gold and silver mine in the Waitekauri Valley near Waihi at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. It first operated as an underground gold mine from 1895 to 1920. Then gold and silver were mined by underground and open pit methods from 1991 to 1998. There was a fire in Newmont Waihi Gold's Trio underground mine at about 5am July 17, 2012, leaving 28 miners trapped. All the miner's were evacuated alive.
