The Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA, formerly the Canterbury Society of Arts Gallery) is an art gallery in the central city of Christchurch, New Zealand. The gallery specialises in the exhibition, sale, valuation, and hire of New Zealand art, as well as offering educational services and advice on fine art. Exhibitions at the gallery change every three weeks, work by over 400 artists has been exhibited every year.
Ballantyne's fire
The Ballantyne's fire on 18 November 1947 remains the deadliest fire in New Zealand history. 41 people died in the blaze in the Christchurch Central City; all were employees who found themselves trapped by the fire or were overcome by smoke while evacuating the store complex without a fire alarm or evacuation plan.
Christchurch Art Gallery
The Christchurch Art Gallery, with the formal name of Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, is the public art gallery of the city of Christchurch, New Zealand. It is funded by Christchurch City Council. It has its own substantial art collection and presents a programme of New Zealand and international exhibitions. The gallery opened on 10 May 2003, replacing the city's former public art gallery, the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, which opened on 16 June 1932 and closed on 16 June 2002.
Christchurch Central City
Christchurch Central City is the geographical centre and the heart of Christchurch, New Zealand. It is defined as the area within the four avenues (Bealey Avenue, Fitzgerald Avenue, Moorhouse Avenue and Deans Avenue) and thus includes the densely built up central city, some less dense surrounding areas of residential, educational and industrial usage, and green space including Hagley Park, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and the Barbadoes Street Cemetery.
St Michael's Church School
St Michael's is a co-educational Anglican primary and intermediate day school situated in the city centre of Christchurch, New Zealand. The school provides an education for year zero to year eight. It is associated with the St Michael and All Angels church. Three of the buildings and structures are registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as heritage items. The church building is registered as a Category I structure.
Discovery 1 School
Discovery 1 School is a state funded primary school and offers individual, discovery based learning programmes. The experiences gained from this different way of learning is subject to research undertaken by the University of Canterbury. The school is temporarily located at 90 McMahon Drive, Aidanfield, after their building in the central city of Christchurch, New Zealand was damaged in the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake.
Godley Statue
The Godley Statue is a bronze statue situated in Cathedral Square in Christchurch, New Zealand. It commemorates the "Founder of Canterbury" John Robert Godley. It was the first statue portraying a person in New Zealand. The statue fell off its plinth in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake and time capsules were discovered inside the plinth.
Scott Statue
The Scott Statue commemorates Robert Falcon Scott. It is located at the intersection of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Street in the Christchurch Central City, New Zealand. The statue, carved by Scott's widow Kathleen Scott, is registered as a Category II historic place. The statue toppled off its plinth in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake.
Bridge of Remembrance
The Bridge of Remembrance is one of two main war memorials in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is dedicated to those who died in World War I, and serves as a memorial for those who participated in two World Wars as well as subsequent conflicts in Borneo, Korea, Malaya, and Vietnam. Owned by Christchurch City Council, it is located on the Cashel Street Bridge at the head of City Mall.
Clarendon Tower
Clarendon Tower is a high rise building on Worcester Street at Oxford Terrace in the Christchurch Central City, New Zealand. Built on the site of the former Clarendon Hotel, the façade of the historic building was kept in the redevelopment and is protected by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust as a Category II heritage structure. Following damage from the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the 17-storey building is being demolished.
Church of St Michael and All Angels, Christchurch
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is an Anglican church in Christchurch, New Zealand. The church building at 84 Oxford Terrace, Christchurch, is registered as Category I by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Its freestanding belfry is registered separately.
