Ardress, County Armagh
Ardress (formerly Ardreske, from Irish: Ardriasc, meaning "height of the marsh") is a townland between Loughgall and Annaghmore in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It is made up of Ardress East and Ardress West. It is within the civil parish of Loughgall and barony of Oneilland West. The area is best known as the site of Ardress House. This was originally a modest farmhouse which was transformed into a mansion in 1760 by Dublin architect George Ensor.
Loughgall Ambush
The Loughgall ambush took place on 8 May 1987 in the village of Loughgall, Northern Ireland. An eight-man Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) unit launched an attack on the village's Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) base, but was ambushed by a British Army Special Air Service (SAS) unit of 25. The SAS shot dead eight IRA members and a civilian. This was the IRA's greatest loss of life in a single incident during The Troubles.
Battle of the Diamond
The Battle of the Diamond was a violent confrontation between the Catholic Defenders and a Protestant faction including Peep o' Day Boys, Orange Boys and local tenant farmers that took place on 21 September 1795 near Loughgall, County Armagh, Ireland. The Protestants were the victors, killing between 4 and 30 Defenders. It led to the foundation of the Orange Order.
