Saluda, North Carolina
The City of Saluda is located in both Henderson and Polk counties in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. Saluda is famous for sitting at the top of the Norfolk Southern Railway's Saluda Grade, the steepest main line standard gauge railroad line east of the Rockies. The main street of Saluda is a bustling hub of newly formed restaurants and art galleries.
Saluda Grade
Saluda Grade is the steepest standard-gauge mainline railway grade in the United States. Owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway as part of its W Line, the Saluda Grade in Polk County, North Carolina consists of a three-mile section of track that rises over 600 feet in elevation with a highest official grade of 4.7% but reaching 5.1% at one point between the towns of Melrose and Saluda. Peter Guice Memorial Bridge
The Peter Guice Memorial Bridge consists of dual two-lane bridges carrying I-26 across the Green River in Western North Carolina. Surpassed only by the Emlenton Bridge in Pennsylvania and the Glade Creek Bridge in West Virginia, it is the third-highest bridge carrying an Interstate Highway in the eastern United States at 225 feet tall. Each bridge is 1,050 feet long and 28 feet wide with two 12-foot lanes and 2-foot shoulders.
