Isles of Shoals
The Isles of Shoals are a group of small islands and tidal ledges situated approximately 6 miles off the east coast of the United States, straddling the border of the states of New Hampshire and Maine.
Star Island
Star Island is one of the Isles of Shoals that straddle the border between New Hampshire and Maine, seven miles from the mainland in the Atlantic Ocean. Star Island is the largest of the four islands in the group that are located in New Hampshire. In 1876, the island was annexed to the town of Rye from the former town of Gosport.
Appledore Island
Appledore Island, Maine, (formerly known as Hog Island) is the largest of the Isles of Shoals located about seven miles off the Maine/New Hampshire coast. It is part of the Town of Kittery, in York County. It was originally settled by Europeans in the colonial era, when the ease of transport by water made farming on island economically efficient. A church was established in 1640.
Smuttynose Island
Smuttynose Island (formerly "Smutty-nose") is one of the Isles of Shoals, located 6 miles off the coast of New Hampshire, but actually in the state of Maine. It is part of the Town of Kittery, in York County. It was named by fishermen, seeing the island at sea level and noticing how the profuse seaweed at one end looked like the "smutty nose" of some vast sea animal. The island is best known for two murders that occurred there.
Shoals Marine Laboratory
Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) is a seasonal marine field station located on Appledore Island, Maine. Appledore Island is the largest of the Isles of Shoals archipelago, a group of rocky islands just offshore of the border between Maine and New Hampshire. The laboratory is cooperatively operated and maintained by Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. Shoals is a residential facility where participants and staff all live together in a close-knit learning community.
White and Seavey Islands
White Island and Seavey Island are in the Isles of Shoals located off the coast of New Hampshire in the town of Rye. During low tide, the two islands are connected by a land bridge. White Island is dominated by Isles of Shoals Light, now automated, and the keeper's house. The lighthouse and associated buildings are now owned by the state of New Hampshire.
Tucke Monument
The Tucke Monument is a 46.5-foot-tall obelisk gravestone monument erected in 1914 to honor Reverend John Tucke (1702 – 1773). The monument is located on Star Island, New Hampshire, where Rev. Tucke was a minister, judge, educator, and physician. The Tucke Monument is the tallest gravestone in the state of New Hampshire, easily beating the twenty-eight foot-tall gravestone of Frank Jones located in Portsmouth.
