Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is the Māori name for a hill, 305 metres high, close to Porangahau, south of Waipukurau in southern Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The name would be often shortened to Taumata by the locals for ease of conversation. The New Zealand Geographic Placenames Database, maintained by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), records the name as "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu".
The Akitio River is in the North Island of New Zealand. It flows generally southeast for 35 kilometres, entering the Pacific Ocean at Akitio to the south of Cape Turnagain on the east coast.
Cape Turnagain is a prominent headland on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, part way between Hawke Bay and Cook Strait, between the mouths of the Porangahau and Akitio Rivers. The cape was named by Captain James Cook in 1769. On his journey of discovery, he sailed south to this point before deciding to turn and head north around New Zealand, and named the point as a result of his decision. There is another Cape Turnagain or Point Turnagain on the Kent Peninsula in Arctic Canada.
Wimbledon, New Zealand
Wimbledon is a locality in Tararua District, New Zealand. It is located on the former SH 52 between Waipukurau and Masterton. It is 21 km from Weber, 9 km from Herbertville on the coast, and 11 km inland from Cape Turnagain. The Waikopiro Stream runs into the Wainui River at Wimbledon. Wimbledon has a war memorial and once had a school, but now consists of a few houses and a tavern.
Herbertville is a small settlement on the eastern coast of the lower Hawkes Bay area. The large promontory just north is Cape Turnagain. So named by Captain Cook who used the location as a well remembered point where he turn his ship and retraced his steps. At the turn of the century Herbertville was a thriving community. It had a large hotel and several shops, a police station and a blacksmiths.
Akitio is a coastal community in the Tararua District of the lower east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The Akitio River runs for approximately 35 kilometres in a southeast by northwest direction, leading to the town of Weber, on State Highway 52. Akitio County, Est. 1911, was formerly governed from Pongaroa, located approximately 30 miles from Akitio Beach, and the Homesteads of Akitio, Marainanga, and Monaroa Stations.
