Hainaut (province)

Hainaut is a province of Wallonia, one of the three regions of Belgium. It borders (clockwise from the North) in Belgium on the provinces of West Flanders, East Flanders, Flemish Brabant and those of Walloon Brabant and Namur, and on France. Battle of Jemappes

The Battle of Jemappes (6 November 1792) took place near the town of Jemappes in Hainaut, Belgium, near Mons during the War of the First Coalition, part of the French Revolutionary Wars. One of the first major offensive battles of the war, it was a victory for the armies of the infant French Republic, and saw the French Armée du Nord, which included a large number of inexperienced volunteers, defeat a substantially smaller regular Austrian army.

Ghislenghien

Ghislenghien is a small town in Belgium near Ath. On July 30, 2004 a high-pressure natural gas pipeline operated at a pressure of 70 bar ruptured following recent third party damage. Twenty-four people died as a result and 150 survivors were hospitalised, most with severe burns. It is thought that damage to the pipeline occurred during the final stages of a car park construction project.
