Haverhill is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 60,879 at the 2010 census. Located on the Merrimack River, it began as a farming community that would evolve into an important industrial center, beginning with sawmills and gristmills run by water power. In the 18th century, Haverhill developed tanneries, shipping and shipbuilding. The town was for many decades home to a significant shoe-making industry.

The Little River is a 12.9-mile-long river located in New Hampshire and Massachusetts in the United States. It is a tributary of the Merrimack River, part of the Gulf of Maine watershed. The Little River rises in Kingston, New Hampshire, flows south through Plaistow, and enters the city of Haverhill, Massachusetts, where it joins the Merrimack River. Most of the Little River's course is marked by suburban and urban development.

It is served by Amtrak's Downeaster, which connects Boston, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine, and is the terminus of the MBTA Commuter Rail Haverhill/Reading Line. The station serves as a replacement for a former Boston and Maine Railroad Depot on Hale Street, and two B&M Freight Houses on Essex Street. All three sites were originally built in or before 1870 and are located north of the existing station.

Winnekenni Castle

Winnekenni Castle is located in the over 700-acre Winnekenni Park Conservation Area, overlooking Kenoza Lake, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Inspired by stone buildings he saw while visiting England, Haverhill chemist Dr. James R. Nichols built it between 1873 and 1875 as a summer home, and he named it and the surrounding land "Winnekenni," an Algonquin word meaning "very beautiful.

Raid on Haverhill (1708)

The Raid on Haverhill was a military engagement that took place on August 29, 1708 during Queen Anne's War. French, Algonquin, and Abenaki warriors under the command of Jean-Baptiste Hertel de Rouville descended on Haverhill, then a small frontier community in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. In the surprise attack, 16 people were killed and another 14 to 24 were taken captive.
