Chappaquiddick Island
Chappaquiddick Island is a small island off the eastern end of the larger island of Martha's Vineyard and is part of the town of Edgartown, Massachusetts. The island became internationally recognized following the July 18, 1969 incident, where U.S. Senator Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy accidentally drove his car off the island's Dike Bridge, which fatally trapped his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne inside.
The Black Dog
The Black Dog is a restaurant and tavern in Vineyard Haven on the island of Martha's Vineyard. The restaurant was founded in 1971, and became well known for its souvenir T-shirts, featuring its logo of the eponymous black dog. They subsequently expanded to sell other products with the same logo. The Black Dog T-shirts became well known during the 1990s as photographs of celebrities wearing the shirts began appearing in national publications.
Katama Airpark
Katama Airpark, in the Katama section of Edgartown, Massachusetts, (508-627-9018) is a public airport owned by the Town of Edgartown. It has three runways, averages 22 flights per day, and has approximately four aircraft based on its field. During World War II, Martha's Vineyard functioned both as an outer defense and a training facility for gunnery and pilots. In addition to the main Martha's Vineyard Airport (MVY), there was a small airport at Katama near a gunnery practice area at the beach.
Chappaquiddick incident
In the Chappaquiddick incident on July 18, 1969, Mary Jo Kopechne, a female passenger of U.S. Senator Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy, was killed when he accidentally drove his car off a bridge and into a tidal channel on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts. Kennedy swam free and left the scene, not reporting the accident for nine hours, but Kopechne died in the vehicle. In the early hours of July 19, Kopechne's body and the car were recovered.
Mytoi
Mytoi (pronounced MY-toy) is a small Japanese garden set within an open pine forest on Chappaquiddick Island, in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The Trustees of Reservations owns and maintains the property. The garden's signature feature is a small pond with an island that is reached by walking over an arched footbridge. Winding footpaths take visitors through birch groves, a dell of camellia and a rock garden.
Wasque
Wasque ("way-squee") or Wasque Beach is a 200-acre nature reserve on Chappaquiddick Island, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The site was established as a reservation for the public in 1967 and is one of five conservation areas on "the Vineyard" managed by the Trustees of Reservations. Wasque contains a sandy strand the Boston Globe calls "a magnificent beach.
