A neighborhood comprising areas within the city limits of northeast El Cajon, as well as areas of unincorporated San Diego County bears the same name. The population of the CDP was 15,379 at the 2010 census, up from 15,169 at the 2000 census (these figures do not include people living within the city of El Cajon).

The stop is a major commuter center for the large suburb, allowing individuals to switch buses or rail lines, use park and ride services, or board regional Greyhound Buses.

The station is inside a shopping center on the northeast quadrant of the intersection of Mission Gorge Road and Cuyamaca Street. It serves as a major park and ride station for this large suburb. Prior to July 2005, all Orange Line trolleys used to end at this station.
Liberty Charter High School (La Mesa, California)
Liberty Charter High School opened to freshman students in August 2008 and added a new class each school year. It is the first start-up charter school in San Diego County and will eventually hold over 450 students. A new campus was scheduled to be constructed in Santee, California, but after the recession started, the campus construction was put on hold due to lack of financing. During the 2009-2010 school year, Liberty was on the campus of its parent school, Literacy First Charter School.

Rancho El Cajon
Rancho El Cajon was a 48,800-acre Mexican land grant in present day San Diego County, California given in 1845 by Governor Pio Pico to María Antonia Estudillo de Pedrorena. The name means "the box" in Spanish, and refers to the valley between hills. The grant encompassed present day El Cajon, Bostonia, Santee, Lakeside, Flinn Springs, and the eastern part of La Mesa. The grant contained the 28-acre Rancho Cañada de los Coches grant.
