Portugal
Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic, is a country located in Southwestern Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula. It is the westernmost country of mainland Europe, and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by Spain to the north and east. Apart from continental Portugal, the Portuguese Republic holds sovereignty over the Atlantic archipelagos of Azores and Madeira, which are autonomous regions of Portugal.
Estado Novo (Portugal)
The Estado Novo ("New State"), or the Second Republic, was the corporatist authoritarian regime installed in Portugal in 1933. It evolved from the Ditadura Nacional formed after the coup d'état of 28 May 1926 against the democratic but unstable First Republic. Together, the Ditadura Nacional and Estado Novo are reckoned as the Second Portuguese Republic.

Siege of Lisbon
The Siege of Lisbon, from July 1 to October 25, 1147, was the military action that brought the city of Lisbon under definitive Portuguese control and expelled its Moorish overlords. The Siege of Lisbon was one of the few Christian victories of the Second Crusade—it was "the only success of the universal operation undertaken by the pilgrim army," i.e. the Second Crusade, according to the contemporary historian Helmold—and is seen as a pivotal battle of the wider Reconquista.
Universidade Aberta
The Universidade Aberta (Open University) is a Portuguese distance education public university, created in 1988. Its headquarters are located in Lisbon, it has two regional centres in Coimbra and Porto, and study centres all over the country. Students are required to be at least 21 years old, and to have completed secondary education. Candidates over 25 with no secondary degree can be admitted after having passed the national university access examination or ad-hoc examination.
First Portuguese Republic
The First Portuguese Republic spans a complex 16 year period in the history of Portugal, between the end of the period of constitutional monarchy marked by the 5 October 1910 revolution and the 28 May coup d'état of 1926. The last movement instituted a military dictatorship known as Ditadura Nacional (national dictatorship) that would be followed by the corporatist Estado Novo (new state) regime of António de Oliveira Salazar.
São Bento Palace
The Palácio de São Bento, "Saint Benedict's Palace", is the home of the Assembly of the Republic, the Portuguese parliament. It is located in Lisbon. Close to Bairro Alto, the Palace of São Bento was formerly known as the seat of the National Assembly (Assembleia Nacional) during the Estado Novo regime. Nearby is the official residence of Portugal’s Prime Minister.
St Andrew's Church, Lisbon
St Andrew’s Church is the only congregation of the Church of Scotland in Portugal. It seeks to provide English-speaking Reformed Christian worship and pastoral care to a multinational community. An English-speaking congregation was established in Lisbon by the Free Church of Scotland in 1866; the present church building in Rua Arriaga in the historic Lapa district of Lisbon was constructed in 1899.

Grande Lisboa (Greater Lisbon in English) is a Portuguese NUTS III subregion integrated in the Lisboa Region. It includes the capital city of Portugal - Lisbon. It is the main economical subregion of the country. It covers 1,376 km² and is the most populated and densely populated Portuguese subregion (2,042,326 inhabitants and 1,455 hab/km²).
National Museum of Ancient Art
The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, located in Lisbon, is an art museum in Portugal. The museum is known as MNAA (in English, National Museum of Ancient Art), and is popularly known as the Museu das Janelas Verdes (Green Windows Museum) due to the color of its windows. It is located in the Palácio de Alvor-Pombal, a former palace of the Count of Alvor, later purchased by the Marquis of Pombal.
Águas Livres Aqueduct
The Águas Livres Aqueduct ("Aqueduct of the Free Waters") is a historic aqueduct in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. It is one of the most remarkable examples of 18th-century Portuguese engineering. The main course of the aqueduct covers 18 km, but the whole network of canals extends through nearly 58 km.
Kingdom of Portugal
The Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves (Portuguese: Reino de Portugal e dos Algarves, Latin: Regnum Portugalliae et Algarbia), was Portugal's general designation under its monarchy. The kingdom was located in the west of the Iberian Peninsula, Europe and existed from 1139 to 1910. The monarchy in Portugal was abolished and replaced by the First Portuguese Republic after the 5 October 1910 revolution.
Estádio das Amoreiras
Estádio das Amoreiras was a multi-use stadium in Lisbon, Portugal. It was used mostly for football matches and hosted the home matches of S.L. Benfica. The stadium was able to hold 20,000 people and opened in 1925. It was demolished in 1940 to make way for a freeway. Benfica would then move to Estádio do Campo Grande.
Estrela Basilica
The Estrela Basilica (Portuguese: Basílica da Estrela) is a basilica in Lisbon, Portugal, built by order of Queen Maria I of Portugal, as a fulfilled promise for giving birth to a son. Construction started in 1779 and the basilica was finished in 1790, after the death of José caused by smallpox in 1788.
Santos-o-Velho (Lisbon)
Santos-o-Velho is one of the 53 freguesias (civil parishes) of Lisbon, Portugal, with an area of 0.51 km² and 4,013 inhabitants (2001). It has a population density of 7899.6 inhabitants/km². It is one of the best preserved historical parts of Lisbon, including Madragoa (former village in the outskirts of Central Lisbon), the Museum of Ancient Art, and many former convents and palaces (in which the current Embassy of France in included). It is also known for its lively nightlife.
Lisbon Synagogue
The Lisbon Synagogue, called Shaaré Tikvah (Gates of Hope) is a historical synagogue in the city of Lisbon, in Portugal. There have been Jews in Lisbon at least since the Middle Ages, but the community suffered a major blow in 1497, when an edict by King Manuel I ordered Jews either to convert to Christianity or to leave the country. All synagogues of Lisbon were confiscated by the King and given to Christian religious orders.

The collection includes Indonesian textiles, Japanese screens, antique snuff bottles, crucifixes made in Asia for Western export, and the Kwok On Collection of masks, costumes, and accessories.
Elevador da Bica
The Bica Funicular (Portuguese: Elevador da Bica or Ascensor da Bica) is a funicular in Lisbon, Portugal, that forms the connection between the Calçada do Combro/Rua do Loreto and the Rua de S. Paulo. It is operated by Carris. The Bica funicular was opened on 28 June, 1892. It climbs the Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo for 245 metres from the Rua S. Paulo. The lower station of this funicular railroad is almost hidden behind a facade on the Rua de S. Paulo with the inscription "Ascensor da Bica".
