The Madras Observatory was founded by the British East India Company in 1786 in Chennai (then Madras). Quaid-e-Millath Government College for Women
During 1974-75, Quaid-e-Millath Govt College for Women replaced the Govt. Arts College for Men at the present location; Anna Salai (Mount Road), Chennai. The Men's college shifted to Nandanam. The Mount Road Arts College was the legacy of Mohameddan Rulers of Wallajah. The Madras Mohamaden College and the Madrasa-e-Azam school for boys functioned from this location. After Independence, Mohamedan College was renamed as Govt. Arts College for Men (1948).
